I recently had a digital nomad visa approved but it was far from easy as expected and ended up taking me 4 weeks. For many, it can be done in a week but it all depends on what additional paperwork Colombian authorities ask for. For business owners it can become be a little daunting. As an employee the process is much easier.
1. You have to be in your home country or in Colombia and expect to stay there for at least 30 days. You can not move once the process starts.
2. You need either a professionally translated letter of employment from a real company OR an apostilled and translated document that proves you own your own company. P.S. Apostilles for Canadian businesses take 5 weeks. American businesses 24 hours but are costly $250. Forms must be dated less than 60 days old.
3. 3 recent Bank statements showing your earn the minimum $1000 per month needed
4. A photocopy of the first page of your passport
5. Last entry stamp (if you are in Colombia)
6. 3x4cm Digital Passport Style photo with white background (can not be the same as your passport)
7. International Health Insurance with coverage in Colombia. Medical insurance needs to be valid for at least one year after your visa application and includes coverage in Colombia for all accidents, illnesses, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death, or repatriation.
Keep in mind that authorities can ask for any additional paperwork on top of the mandatory requirements.
Do I suggest a lawyer? Depends if you like easy flow and explanations for everything. They range from $200 to $400 extra per visa.
So yes.... The Digital Nomad Visa for Colombia can be quick and easy OR it can be a challenge. Just depends on a little luck if you are randomly selected for additonal paperwork based on your current employment as a digital nomad.
keep in mind once approved, you then need to report the the Immigration office for your actual visa stamp and Cedula. (that's an entire post in itself.
