Germany Now Open For American Tourists

Germany will ease restrictions on U.S. travelers from June 20th. The news comes as Europe prepares to open up to American travelers, with Italy, Malta, France, Switzerland, Portugal, and many more EU countries easing restrictions on the U.S. this month. 

Until today, U.S citizens needed to prove they had an exceptional or urgent need to apply for entry. The EU decided to add the U.S. to its “white list” last week, but it’s unclear when the EU will fully change the travel policy for Americans. 

The Entry Requirements

On Sunday, the German National Tourist Office declared that Germany would ease restrictions on all U.S travelers with proof of vaccination or evidence that they’ve recovered from COVID-19 between 28 days and six months before your trip.

Travelers can also show a negative PCR test within 72 hours of arrival in Germany. Alternatively, travelers can show evidence a rapid antigen test 48 hours before arriving in the country. 

Travelers should register online before traveling to Germany, and that's where you’ll upload your proof of vaccination. In addition, U.S. travelers with vaccination cards must show a digital or written version of the vaccination card when they enter the country.

Unlike some countries, you can’t show a cellphone photo of your vaccination proof. Germany will only allow vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency, and these include:

• Moderna
• Pfizer/BioNTech 
• Johnson & Johnson 
• AstraZeneca 

Travelers must have received their final dose of the vaccination at least 14 days before their arrival in Germany. The German authorities claim that the U.S. is no longer a risk area, and that’s why the country removed the quarantine on arrival.

If you’re coming with children and they’re over six years old, the children must be fully vaccinated or show a negative COVID-19 within 72 hours before arrival.  

The COVID-19 Situation In Germany 

Cases of COVD-19 have dropped in the last two months in Germany to a daily average of 976 cases. The country has recorded a total of 3,703,126 cases since the pandemic began, with 90,400 deaths. Germany began its vaccination rollout in January 2020, and they have administered 65,142,301 vaccine doses so far. 

The Current Restrictions In Germany 

There are restrictions in Germany despite the decrease in COVID-19 cases and the rising vaccinations. The authorities restricted private gatherings in Germany to a maximum of five people, but fully vaccinated people are exempt from these restrictions. 

There are still restrictions on bars, museums, art galleries, and many cultural and leisure activities. Medical grade masks are compulsory in shops and public transport. However, the restrictions depend on your location in Germany. 

The Citizens Permitted To Enter Germany

Germany has welcomed travelers from many nations around the world this week. The country allows all nationals, residents, and citizens from EU countries to enter the country. 

Citizens from Switzerland, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand, and Israel may enter. However, from yesterday, the country will allow citizens from Hong Kong, Macau, Serbia, Taiwan, and Albania if they have proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test. 

The news that Germany has removed most restrictions on American travelers entering Germany is another welcome relief to the millions of U.S. travelers wanting a vacation in Europe. Since the pandemic began, Europe has banned U.S. travelers from entering the continent for non-essential travel.
