Travel Alert IssuedOct 12

Problem: Travelers in Mazatlan and southern Sinaloa are facing rapidly deteriorating coastal conditions, port closures, and impending flight disruptions starting tonight.

Why it matters: Hurricane Simon is tracking slowly northwest parallel to the coast and is forecast to turn northeast toward Sinaloa, with the center about 215 miles south of Mazatlan; tropical storm conditions are projected to reach the Sinaloa coast by Tuesday night, followed by potential hurricane conditions and 6 to 8 inches of flooding rain by Wednesday.

Advice: If you want to fly out ahead of the storm, book a seat on a flight departing today before winds halt airport operations, and if you are staying, secure loose outdoor items, stock up on water and batteries, and stay completely out of the ocean as life-threatening surf and rip currents are already hitting the coastline.
