This English-Speaking European City With Intact Viking Fortresses, $6 Pints, And Zero Crowds Is Breaking Tourism Records

Don’t we just love it when it’s easy to get by in a foreign country, and not only do they have a wealth of ancient and medieval sights you’re pretty sure are older than the entire country of America, but they speak your own language?

Well, sort of.

A small port city set on the banks of the River Suir in Ireland’s sunny south-east, Waterford is rising fast in popularity as travellers look beyond overpriced and overcrowded spots like Dublin: its city-center footfall rose a whopping 30% during summer 2025 alone.

This English-Speaking European City With Intact Viking Fortresses, $6 Pints, And Zero Crowds Is Breaking Tourism Records

It just happens to be Ireland’s oldest city, packed with Viking history, medieval towers, old-school pubs slinging roughly $6 pints of Guinness, and none of the Dublin city-center crowds, so we can’t say we’re surprised.

Oh, and sure, Ireland may have its funny little dialects and some of the humor definitely gets lost in translation, but at least you’re not fighting for dear life trying to make yourself understood by passive-aggressive French waiters:

Ireland’s Oldest City Is One Hell Of A Good Craic

According to data recently published by Waterford City and County Council, city-center footfall—which in non-technical terms means pedestrian movements recorded downtown—rose from 3.75 million to 4.89 million during summer 2025.

This includes locals and repeat passes, too, not just tourists, but the trend is clear: word has got out Ireland’s oldest city, with a rich history stretching as far back as the year 914, is all the rage, and there’s no going back from here.

Historic Church In Waterford, Ireland

I mean, it was only a matter of time until Americans discovered Dublin’s rowdy Temple Bar pubs and Galway’s sanitized bohemian scene weren’t all that to begin with.

You see, Waterford is still your average Irish city, with a gritty, working-port character complete with low-rise buildings and busy docks, and for all the coastal beauty it harbors, the weather here can feel dispiritingly-gray at times.

But it has something the jam-packed capital, and its tourist-polished rival Galway out west, lack:

It still feels authentically Irish rather than a put-on show for beer buffs and ancestry-chasing yanks.

This is Ireland’s first-ever established city we’re talking about.

Historic Medieval Walls Of Waterford, Ireland

Sure, Celts, Gaelic chieftains and early Christian monks roamed these lands long before the Vikings came, but it was the fearsome Norse warriors who first dug in and set up a functioning city here in the long-forgotten year of 914 AD.

This means Waterford has over 1,100 years of urban history, and despite its ancient pedigree—at least by Irish standards—it retains a remarkable concentration of historic landmarks.

You won’t find an abundance of medieval walls and defensive towers scattered around Dublin’s polished city center. In Waterford, on the other hand, you’ll come upon Viking defences, Norman churches, medieval chambers and Georgian palaces, all concentrated in a walkable Old Town area.

This is the home of Ireland’s oldest civic building, and I’m not sure about you, but that’s reason enough for me to take a detour here alone:

Reginald's Tower In Waterford, Ireland

Reginald’s Tower is that imposing circular stone fortress built in the early 13th-century over the site of an earlier Viking fort, housing a permanent collection of Viking artefacts, weapons, coins and other archaeological finds.

A short two-minute walk from the tower, the Medieval Museum wraps a modern building around two literal medieval spaces, with archaeological finds and art exhibits displayed in genuine 13th and 15th-century chambers.

Does Waterford Have The Coolest Museums In Ireland?

I’m not crazy about museums myself, see, but this one is worth going for the medieval wine vaults, original stonework, Henry VIII’s surviving Cap of Maintenance and the exceptional collection of rare, gold-embroidered vestments.

In fact, museum-hopping is half the fun of coming to Waterford.

Colorful House Facades In Waterford, Ireland

The King of the Vikings is this super-cool, immersive virtual-reality experience where you can strap on a headset inside a reconstructed Viking house and retrace the city’s Norse origins yourself.

The Irish Museum of Time is yet another quirky museum, this time entirely devoted to Ireland’s centuries-old clockmaking tradition.

Top marks if you somehow leave without deciding you suddenly need an antique clock in your life.

Ancient Irish lore is basically everywhere you look in Waterford, and it wouldn’t be any different as far as the local cathedral is concerned.

It may be fairly young, having been built only in the 1700s, but Christ Church Cathedral actually hides a much older secret: the present church stands on the site where Strongbow, an Anglo-Norman lord, and native Irish Princess Aoife are believed to have married in 1170.

Historic Bell Tower In Waterford, Ireland

A two-minute stroll from the cathedral grounds, through the cobbled lanes of the Viking Triangle, will take you to the Bishop’s Palace.

This one’s an elegant Georgian residence filled with the kind of 18th-century furnishings, gilt furniture, and paintings you’d expect to find in a far more opulent French countryside château rather than an Irish dwelling.

It’s also home to the 1789 Penrose Decanter, the oldest surviving piece of Waterford glass.

There’s no discussing Waterford without bringing up its centuries-old glassmaking legacy, and there’s even a whole House of Waterford Crystal visitor center and factory tour, where you can watch craftspeople blow, cut and engrave the world-famous crystal.

Is Waterford Safe?

Picturesque Waterfront In Waterford, Ireland

Waterford is generally safer and easier to navigate than the sprawling Dublin. Its Historic Center is way smaller, crowds are noticeably thinner, and there are fewer packed transport hubs to attract opportunistic pickpockets.

That doesn’t make it crime-free. Petty theft and late-night antisocial behavior can occur, especially in pub-heavy areas, so do avoid leaving belongings unattended, responding to provocations from ill-intentioned, bevvied individuals, and keep your phone and wallet close.

Ireland remains a Level 1 destination under the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisory system, meaning Americans should exercise normal precautions.

It also scores 85 out of 100 on the Travel Off Path Traveler Safety Index, based on live reports from recent visitors.

Is Waterford Cheaper Than Dublin?

There’s also an argument to be made about Waterford’s relative affordability compared to Dublin.

Listen, I’m not gonna sit here and blatantly lie to you that it’s dirt cheap in comparison. It’s not.

Accommodation is indeed cheaper, but the difference is more modest when it comes to pub meals, drinks and museum entry fees.

You’ll still be spending roughly $150–220 per person per day, assuming two people share a room. Ireland as a whole is definitely not the place to go if you’d like to get your money’s worth sipping on $3 wine on some sun-drenched European island.

It gets measurable rain on around 165 days a year in this part of Ireland, if you know what I mean, so you can decide for yourself how you’d rather spend your dollars hopping across the pond.

Bartender Pouring A Pint Of Guinness In Ireland

However, if you have a penchant for Irish history, or perhaps you’re drawn to your Irish roots yourself, Waterford is clearly the better-value pick out of the batch: it’s more historical, the medieval flair is still tangible, and the pub zone hasn’t been fully overtaken by stag do attendees.

Henry Downes & Co is still this atmospheric, late-18th-century institution with wonderfully old-fashioned interiors—dark wooden snugs and all—pouring its signature No. 9 whiskey alongside pints costing roughly $6.30.

Then there’s Tom Maher’s, a cozy, traditional Irish pub on O’Connell Street, with a long, timber-lined interior that just screams Old World and a century-old reputation for its killer Whiskey Mac: a warming mix of Irish whiskey and ginger wine.

Yes, it’s likely to rain whilst you’re here, alright, but at least a pint of that creamy, dark stout is roughly 10–15% cheaper than in Dublin on average.

No Fingerprinting In Ireland This Season—Or Any Other

By the way, one cool thing about visiting Ireland is that, as a U.S. citizen, you won’t be subject to Europe’s new Entry/Exit System, or EES, here.

Traveler holding USA passport

You know, that dreadful new system that can leave Americans waiting in longer airport queues to be fingerprinted and photographed?

Ireland has a full opt-out by virtue of not being a member of the Schengen Area, so you can fly straight into the Emerald Isle without jumping through a single one of those annoying biometric hoops.

If you’re transiting through a third European country on your way to Ireland, however, the rules depend on the connection: you may face EES checks if you have to clear Schengen border control, while entering the United Kingdom—even to make a landside connection—requires a UK ETA in advance.

This is no longer the Europe you once visited hassle-free five or ten years ago: travel rules have changed drastically.

If you’re unsure which entry and stay regulations apply at your country of arrival or final destination, use the Entry Requirement Checker to pull up the full list of documents.
