If you didn’t feel like splurging on a $1,000-a-night caldera-view villa in Santorini in July, and those round-trip tickets to Rome were a little too pricey to book last-minute, you don’t need to beat yourself up.
There’s no time to mourn the Eurosummer that never was.
Many people mistakenly think fall across the pond is inherently synonymous with rusty foliage, misty mornings, and hot chockie dates, but unless that’s in Paris, London, Milan, and the like, October can be, ahem, rather summery for quite a while.
These 5 unique Euro gems still boast temperatures in the mid-70s°F as late as October, and if you’re worrying about depleting your savings in this crazy economy, they won’t cost an arm and a leg to enjoy:
Córdoba, Spain

Córdoba lies in the Andalusian hinterlands of southern Spain, where it’s a proper soaker well into late October, and summer lingers like a clingy ex.
In fact, if I were you, I’d avoid coming here in August at all costs: that’s when the scorching heat, packed streets, and thermometers hit the 100°F mark. As for the city itself, how about a beautifully preserved medieval maze with layers upon layers of history stacked on top of one another?
From the Romans to the Visigoths to the Moors, the North African Muslim conquerors who ruled much of southern Spain in the Middle Ages, Córdoba is a fascinating cultural tapestry that somehow still holds together.
There are very few places in Europe where you could cross Roman bridges, wander narrow lanes running along whitewashed houses overflowing with flower pots, and stumble upon ancient minarets all within meters of one another. The main event, though? How about that grandiose Cathedral-Mosque?
La Mezquita is an immense mosque dating from 785 A.D., built following the Muslim conquest of the city.
It’s been a Catholic church since the Moors were expelled from Córdoba in the 13th century, but to this day, its columned prayer hall, decorated with distinctive red-and-white arches and Byzantine mosaics, is maybe second only to Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia.

Nicknamed the ‘Dubai of Cyprus’, Limassol best known for its cluster of shimmery, glassed-in skyscrapers, straddling the Eastern Mediterranean, but you’d be wrong to assume there’s not much else on offer beyond a fast-growing business district.
To put it simply, the Old Town is way cuter than Nicosia’s mess of a barbed-wire, checkpoint-dotted Historic Center.

Back to Limassol, its water-facing old core is criss-crossed with narrow lanes and peppered with family-owned tavernas, and it even has this huge castle, only a few meters from a turquoise sea.
In fact, to my fellow History buffs out there, tradition has it this castle is where Richard the Lionheart wed his beloved Berengaria during his short stint on the island on his way back from the Third Crusade.
If you’re here for the beaches, Kourion is probably the pick of the bunch: right below a sprawling set of ancient ruins, backed by dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters, and it’s a short 20-minute drive out of town.

The most gorgeous little coastal town surrounded by medieval walls and criss-crossed by cobbled lanes, Lagos is that picture-perfect, easygoing pit stop you didn’t know you desperately needed.
If you’re coming on a train from Faro, it’s probably the last town you’ll be visiting on your tour of the Algarve, but I’d linger and say it’s probably where you want to stay the longest.
The Old Town is a charming display of old tiled façades, whitewashed houses, ornate Baroque churches, azulejo-clad buildings, and tiny padarias selling fresh-out-of-the-oven egg tarts.
I also had some of the best grilled sardines in the Algarve at Adega da Marina, a short five-minute walk from Praça Gil Eanes. Lagos’ big trump card, however, is its proximity to several of the Algarve’s most jaw-dropping beaches.
Starting from the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, on the edge of the Old Town, the Ponta da Piedade trail is a roughly 2-mile cliffside walk along a wooden boardwalk that passes beautiful golden-sand beaches like Praia dos Estudantes, a tiny cove framed by a Roman bridge, and Praia do Pinhão, a secluded little beach bathed by crystal-clear seas.
Now, beware: it may be a balmy 65°F here in the off-season, but this is the Atlantic, after all. Don’t dive headfirst expecting Mediterranean-warm waters.

The Algarve Is One Of The Safest Beach Destinations In Europe
Also, side note: Lagos, and the wider Algarve, is one of the safest European destinations to visit this fall if it’s beaching and enjoying some time in the sun you need.
The largest towns here have about 40,000 to 50,000 residents, whereas the rest of the region is largely made up of rural communities inland and quaint fishing settlements, so you can leave your hyper-awareness and anti-crime tactics to larger cities like Lisbon and Porto.
That’s not to say it’s exactly crime-free: basically every beach in Europe nowadays is affected by petty crime to some degree, but it does occur at a much-lower rate than in other Euro hotspots.
On the Traveler Safety Index, the Algarve scores 83 out of 100, based on reports from recent visitors:
La Palma, Spain

Everyone’s off to the sun-drenched Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote as soon as temps start dropping, but I’ll be heading in the other direction instead to La Palma, this 273-square-mile island on the western edge of the Canaries that has escaped only a fraction of the region’s mass tourism.
A lush volcano rising out of the azure waters of the Atlantic, it’s far too remote from the European mainland to experience seasons like the continent does. It actually sits on the African tectonic plate.
The Ruta de los Volcanes, a roadtrip by volcanic peaks and craters, is a truly mind-blowing roadtrip I suggest you take at least once in your lifetime, and those black sand beaches down by the coast? Very few places had me wondering whether I was actually seeing with my own eyes or just straight-up hallucinating.
The coolest part is this an island deeply shaped by its volcanic past:
Back in 2021, the thunderous beast that is the Tajogaite volcano, one of the newest in the recent history of the island, completely reshaped parts of the island around Cumbre Vieja, a popular spot for hiking and sightseeing.
You can still visit the lava fields and marvel at the destruction, just don’t expect it to look the exact same if you ever come back years down the line.
The draw here is truly the wild nature and the endless banana plantations, but in case you’re craving some of that good, Old World charm, Santa Cruz de la Palma is a gorgeous colonial capital dotted with colorful facades, beautiful colonial churches, and cobble-paved lanes lined with colorful wooden balconies.

Trapani, Italy

Stretching along the far western edge of Sicily, wedged between the azure Mediterranean Sea and rugged mountains, Trapani is a handsome port city occupying a narrow historic peninsula, lapped by waterfront promenades and criss-crossed by charming pedestrianised lanes.
Its Historic Center is peppered with old church domes, honey-colored buildings with the iconic green shutters, and faded palazzi that bear witness to centuries of history. If places like Palermo and Catania feel a little too rough around the edges for you, not to mention a little unkempt, Trapani is that sweet spot of weathered elegance.
Nothing hits quite like enjoying a pistachio gelato as you stroll down the pedestrianised Corso Vittorio Emanuele, peeking into shops and wandering past sun-drenched terraces.
Then maybe, when the hunger hits, stopping by a trattoria with a view of a grand Baroque church for a glass of wine and a plate of fresh tuna pasta, with fish brought straight over from the neighbouring island of Favignana.
I’d wrap up the day either lounging at Spiaggia delle Mura di Tramontana, a narrow strip of sand at the foot of the old town walls, as the sea is still surprisingly pleasant to go in in the fall and early winter, or taking the cable car for a sunset aperitivo in Erice, this cute, ridiculously atmospheric medieval town perched on a hill above Trapani.
I guess I should also mention Trapani serves as a gateway to the Egadi Islands, where you’ll find the Santorini of Italy, also known as Levanzo, and the cinematic beauty that is Favignana, where Christopher Nolan filmed scenes for his new ‘Odyssey’.
