Paris And Rome Are Overrated — Europe’s Hidden Eastern Gem Has Medieval Castles, Cheap Eats, And Cobblestone Streets

Share The Article

The Colosseum and the Eiffel Tower are absolutely bucket-list worthy, but fighting through shoulder-to-shoulder crowds in 100-degree heat while paying twenty euros for a mediocre sandwich isn’t always how I want to spend my time and money.

When I want a European escape that actually feels like a vacation, my wife Liz and I skip the heavily marketed Western capitals entirely. We leave our golden retriever Lemon with her favorite sitter, pack our bags, and head straight for the Baltics.

If you want to step into a city that feels like it was pulled directly out of a fantasy novel, complete with towering stone walls, incredibly affordable food, and zero crushing crowds, you need to book a ticket to Tallinn, Estonia. And I can tell you why…

Here is exactly why this hidden eastern gem needs to be at the very top of your European itinerary, and exactly how you can get there.

The Vibe: A Perfectly Preserved Medieval Masterpiece

Most major European cities have a tiny, heavily sanitized “historic block” surrounded by massive modern skyscrapers. Tallinn is operating on a completely different level.

  • The Old Town: The entire historic center, known as Vanalinn, is a massive, incredibly well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through the winding, cobblestone streets genuinely feels like wandering through a capital city in a novel.
  • The Fortifications: The city is still surrounded by its original medieval defensive walls, punctuated by massive stone watchtowers with striking red-tiled roofs. You can actually climb up and walk along sections of the ancient battlements.
  • The Atmosphere: Because it sits much further north, the weather in the peak of summer is crisp, cool, and incredibly refreshing compared to the suffocating heatwaves currently hammering Southern Europe.

The Sights: Towering Castles and Panoramic Views

As a guy who spends his time back home hitting the trails, I love a destination that forces you to move and rewards you with altitude.

Tallinn completely delivers on that front.

  • Toompea Hill: The upper part of the Old Town is perched on a towering limestone hill. Hiking up the steep cobblestone alleys gets your heart rate up and totally immerses you in the historic architecture.
  • The Castle: At the top of the hill, you will find Toompea Castle, a massive stone fortress that currently houses the Estonian Parliament, sitting right next to the visually staggering, onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
  • The Payoff: You absolutely have to find your way to the Kohtuotsa viewing platform. It gives you a sweeping, top-down panoramic view of the medieval rooftops contrasting directly with the deep blue waters of the Baltic Sea in the background.

The Culinary Scene: Hearty and Highly Affordable

Western Europe will completely drain your wallet if you want a decent dinner, but Tallinn is an absolute culinary powerhouse that operates on a fraction of the budget.

  • The Flavor Profile: The food here is a brilliant, unpretentious mix of hearty Nordic and Baltic traditions. It is incredibly clean, heavily locally sourced, and intensely flavorful.
  • My Go-To Order: The roasted root vegetables, wild boar, and thick, dark rye bread served in the local taverns are unbelievable.
  • The Tavern Experience: You have to grab dinner at one of the candlelit medieval taverns tucked into the Old Town square. Eating a massive, rustic meal while drinking local beer out of a heavy clay mug for less than the price of a basic appetizer in Paris is the ultimate travel win.

The Logistics: Getting There As An American

If you are flying out of the States, you won’t find a direct, nonstop flight straight into Tallinn’s airport. However, the journey is still incredibly seamless if you know how to properly route your trip.

  • The Standard Flight Route: Most major airlines offer very easy one-stop flights from the U.S. into Estonia. You can catch flights that connect through massive European hubs, like flying Lufthansa through Frankfurt or Munich, or taking KLM through Amsterdam.
  • The Baltic Ferry Hack: My absolute favorite way to reach Estonia is to bypass the connecting flights entirely and use the ferry system. You can book a flight into Helsinki, Finland, and catch a ferry right across the Baltic Sea.
  • The Crossing Experience: The ferry ride from Helsinki to Tallinn is incredibly fast, taking as little as two hours to complete the crossing. Operators like Tallink Silja Line, Viking Line, and Eckerö Line run multiple sailings every single day. These massive ships are remarkably comfortable, offering spacious seating areas, restaurants, duty-free shopping, and sweeping views of the water. You literally just walk onto the ship at the terminal in Finland and step off right next to Tallinn’s Old Town.
