I Visited North America’s Only All-Inclusive Mountain Resort—And It Might Just Beat The Beach

When we hear the phrase “all-inclusive resort,” we almost universally picture the exact same exhausting tropical routine. You wake up at 6:00 AM to aggressively claim a plastic pool lounger with a rolled-up towel, you drink sugary neon cocktails out of plastic cups, and you settle for mediocre buffet food for five days straight just because it is convenient.

I always defaulted to the Caribbean when I wanted a frictionless, wallet-friendly getaway. But I recently took a trip that rewired how I view the all-inclusive model.

I checked out Club Med Quebec Charlevoix—the very first, and currently only, all-inclusive mountain resort in North America. While most people instantly associate mountain lodges with freezing winter ski trips, I actually went right in the middle of summer. I was curious to see if the all-inclusive concept could survive without a swim-up bar and a white sand beach.

It didn’t just survive; it blew the traditional beach vacation out of the water. If you want a trip that actually makes you feel alive rather than just sunburned and lethargic, here is exactly what it is like to experience an all-inclusive mountain escape.

The Commute: A Beautiful, Frictionless Drive

Getting to a remote mountain lodge usually requires renting a 4×4 and white-knuckling it up a terrifying, winding cliffside road. Charlevoix removes that friction entirely.

You can fly directly into Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB). From there, the drive up to the resort is incredibly easy and undeniably pretty. You cruise along a well-maintained, scenic highway that traces the edge of the St. Lawrence River for about 90 minutes.

By the time you pull up to the front doors of the lodge, you are already completely immersed in the dense, towering pine forests, completely stress-free.

The Activities: Mountain Biking The Ski Slopes

A beach vacation is inherently designed for total lethargy. You lay flat, drink, and sleep. But if you want to actually stay active, this mountain offers absolutely tons to do all year long.

Because the massive winter snowpack had melted, the resort’s towering ski mountain was entirely transformed into a massive playground. I spent my days mountain biking straight down the plunging ski trails. Carving through the dirt switchbacks while looking directly out over the massive, sprawling blue waters of the St. Lawrence River is an absolute adrenaline rush. When you finally reach the bottom, you just hook your bike onto the gondola and ride right back up to the resort.

Tip From The Editor (me): You do not need to be a hardcore extreme sports athlete to enjoy the mountain. The resort offers guided hikes, trailing running paths, and incredibly peaceful yoga sessions on outdoor wooden decks overlooking the valley. You can push yourself as hard, or as little, as you want.

The Food: Breaking The Buffet Curse

Let’s address the elephant in the room: all-inclusive buffets usually range from boring to downright bad. I went in expecting the standard heat-lamp food, but the culinary program here is genuinely incredible.

The main dining hall features a massive, sprawling buffet, but it leans heavily into authentic, localized Quebecois cuisine. There were massive spreads of local cheeses, fresh-baked French breads, carving stations, and incredible seafood.

I ate there every single day and never once grew tired of the options. They completely nailed the balance of high-end gourmet dining with the sheer, unlimited volume you want after burning calories on the mountain all day.

The Entertainment: The Secret Of The Staff

One of the most uniquely awesome parts of the Club Med experience is what happens after the sun goes down. Most resorts hire outside corporate entertainment companies to put on cheesy, half-hearted stage shows.

At Charlevoix, the nightly shows are legitimately amazing, and they are performed entirely by the resort workers. The people executing full stage choreography and acrobatics are the exact same people who were working around the property all day.

The guy flying across the stage in the evening show could literally be the same bartender who was pouring your drinks that afternoon, or the guide who led your mountain bike tour. It creates this incredibly fun, tight-knit community vibe that you simply cannot replicate at a massive 2,000-room mega-resort.

The Security: A Level 1 Safe Haven

When trading a well-known beach destination for a massive Canadian mountain, safety is a massive perk.

  • The Government Advisory: Canada holds a strict Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) safety advisory from the U.S. State Department. This is the safest possible travel tier on the globe.
  • The Traveler Safety Index: Canada boasts a Traveler Safety Index Score of 83/100. Help other travelers by voting below!
  • The Vibe: Because the resort is a self-contained compound sitting on an isolated mountain ridge, opportunistic petty crime simply does not exist here. You can leave your gear on the racks and walk the property under the stars with complete peace of mind.

The Verdict: I Have To Go Back For Winter

Spending the summer hiking and biking the trails of Le Massif was an unforgettable experience that completely cured my all-inclusive burnout. But staring down those massive, plunging vertical drops all week planted a serious seed.

Seeing the sheer scale of the mountain and the flawless ski-in/ski-out infrastructure connected right to the locker rooms made me really, really want to go back to ski there. I can only imagine how incredible it feels to carve through fresh powder and ski directly up to an open bar for après-ski mulled wine.

The tropical beaches will always be there, but the era of the mountain all-inclusive has officially arrived.
