Lonely Planet just released their massive Best in Travel 2027 lineup this week, and the selections are absolutely incredible. They highlighted everything from the vast mountain ranges of the Veneto in Italy to the sweeping landscapes of Kazakhstan.
The list is incredibly inspiring, but if we are being totally honest, everyday travelers do not always have the patience for thirty hour travel days and three separate airport layovers. Sometimes you just want to get on a plane, have a drink, take a nap, and wake up at your final destination.
I spend a huge chunk of my year scoping out tropical beaches and international hotspots for Travel Off Path, so I decided to filter their massive global list down to reality.
I took the best expert picks from Lonely Planet that actually feature easy logistics from the United States and rounded them out with a few of my own personal favorites.
If you want world class experiences without the headache of connecting flights, here are the 6 best destinations Americans can fly nonstop to in 2027.
1. Costa Rica (Monteverde) – The Eco Paradise
Lonely Planet nailed this one. Costa Rica has always been a heavy hitter in the travel space, but the Monteverde region is stepping into the global spotlight for 2027. You can easily catch a nonstop flight from major United States hubs directly into San Jose or Liberia, grab your rental car, and head straight up into the mountains.
The Vibe: This is the ultimate jungle escape. You are trading crowded beaches and loud mega resorts for dense, lush cloud forests and incredible biodiversity. It is a nature lovers absolute dream.
The Highlight: Walking the famous hanging suspension bridges right through the jungle canopy. You get to see the rainforest from a completely different perspective, spotting sloths, exotic birds, and monkeys right in their natural habitat.
Tip From The Editor (me): If you are going to drive up to Monteverde yourself, renting a proper 4×4 vehicle is completely non negotiable. The mountain roads get incredibly steep, winding, and bumpy. Having the right vehicle makes the journey part of the fun instead of a stressful nightmare.
2. Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic – The Editor’s Pick
Lonely Planet picked a lot of great spots, but they definitely missed the boat on the Dominican Republic. Right now, Puerto Plata is going through a massive tourism revival. With the brand new Punta Bergantin luxury development launching on the north coast, major hotel brands like Hyatt and Marriott are flooding into the area. Best of all, you can fly direct from the East Coast straight into Gregorio Luperon International Airport.
The Vibe: Upscale, modern luxury built right on top of virgin beach land. It is a completely fresh alternative to the crowded, highly saturated beaches of Punta Cana.
The Highlight: The brand new resorts are pulling out all the stops to win your business. You get incredibly untouched beaches, highly elevated dining concepts, and a much more relaxed atmosphere than the southern part of the country.
Tip From The Editor (me): Skip the long, bumpy bus rides from other airports. Because Puerto Plata has its own international hub right next to the major hotel zones, you can literally land, grab your bags, and be checking into your oceanfront suite in just a few minutes.
3. Miami, Florida – The Domestic Escape
Miami made the official Lonely Planet cut for 2027, and it is easy to see why. Not every epic vacation requires a passport. Miami offers one of the most culturally rich, visually stunning city breaks in the entire country, and you can fly nonstop there from virtually every single commercial airport in America.
The Vibe: High energy, incredibly stylish, and deeply rooted in Latin American culture. It is a city that never really sleeps, offering world class nightlife right alongside stunning beaches.
The Highlight: Exploring the Wynwood Walls. The neighborhood has transformed into a massive outdoor museum featuring incredible street art and murals from artists all over the globe.
Tip From The Editor (me): Do not limit your dining choices to the overpriced tourist traps right on South Beach. Take a short ride over to Little Havana for the most authentic, incredible Cuban sandwiches and strong coffee you will ever have in your life.
4. Mazatlan, Mexico – The Editor’s Pick
I have to throw my own home base into the mix here. Mazatlan is completely overlooked by the masses who automatically book flights to Cancun or Cabo, which is exactly why it is so incredible. You can catch direct flights here from major hubs like Los Angeles, Dallas, and Phoenix.
The Vibe: This is an authentic, historic Mexican city that just happens to be located right on the beach. It has a deeply rich local culture that feels incredibly genuine compared to the highly manicured resort towns.

The Highlight: Exploring the cobblestone streets of Petit Champlain. It is arguably the most picturesque neighborhood in North America, packed with incredible local boutiques, cafes, and stunning architecture.
Tip From The Editor (me): Bring your most comfortable, broken in walking shoes. The historic district is incredibly hilly, and those authentic cobblestones are beautiful to look at but highly unforgiving on your ankles after a few hours of exploring.
6. Alaska – The Final Frontier
Alaska is another brilliant Lonely Planet selection for 2027. During the summer months, major airlines ramp up their direct flight schedules from the West Coast and Midwest, making it easier than ever to reach the wild north.

Tip From The Editor (me): You must pack layers, even if you are traveling in the dead of July. The weather can change in an instant, and the wind coming off the water during a glacier boat tour will chill you to the bone if you only bring a t-shirt.
