I constantly look for destinations that hit that perfect sweet spot—where you only need a light jacket at night and a t-shirt during the day, no matter what month is on the calendar.

It usually comes down to geography: you either want places close to the equator but at a high altitude, or island destinations regulated by cool ocean currents.

When the freezing winter hits back home in the States, or the muggy summer humidity sets in, these are the places I look to for a guaranteed climate escape.

1. Spain (The Canary Islands)

Right off the coast of West Africa, this Spanish archipelago is famously known as the “Islands of Eternal Spring.” The Atlantic Ocean regulates the temperature, keeping the harsh Saharan heat at bay in the summer while preventing any real winter chills. Destinations like Tenerife and Gran Canaria see average temperatures resting comfortably between 68°F and 77°F 365 days a year.

• The Highlight: Hiking through the otherworldly lava fields of Teide National Park on Tenerife.

Tip From The Editor (me): The volcanic rock on these hiking trails is sharp and unforgiving. I strictly wear my trail-running Hokas here to save my feet. After a long hike, skip the tourist restaurants and find a local guachinche to order papas arrugadas—wrinkly salted potatoes served with a spicy red mojo sauce.

They don’t call Medellín the “City of Eternal Spring” for nothing. I’ve been in the fall, the spring, and the summer, and every visit is met with fantastic weather.

Because it sits in the Aburrá Valley at an elevation of about 5,000 feet, the climate stays wonderfully balanced. You can expect daily averages hovering right around a perfect 72°F (22°C) from January straight through December. It is lush, vibrant, and you can definitely leave the heavy winter coats at home.

• The Vibe: Energetic, forward-thinking, and heavily focused on outdoor cafe culture. The city is built into the steep hillsides, giving you sweeping views from almost any neighborhood.
• The Highlight: Riding the Metrocable public transit system over the city rooftops and straight up into the surrounding Andean peaks.

Tip From The Editor (me): Take the Metrocable Line L all the way up to Parque Arví. Even though the city is 72°F, the park sits at a higher elevation and can get a bit chilly and misty. I always pack a light rain shell in my daypack for this exact trip, then grab a hot cup of fresh tinto (black coffee) from a local vendor at the top.

3. Portugal (The Azores)

If you want dramatic volcanic landscapes without the heavy tropical humidity, the Azores are your spot. Sitting right in the middle of the Atlantic, this Portuguese territory doesn’t really have an off-season when it comes to weather. Summers peak around 75°F and winters rarely drop below 55°F. It’s perfect for hiking and outdoor exploration without overheating.

• The Vibe: Often described as Hawaii meets Jurassic Park. It is overwhelmingly green, steep, and relatively untouched by commercial tourism.

Just know the water is heavily rich in iron and has a distinct rusty orange color. Don’t wear a white or light-colored swimsuit, because the mineral water will permanently stain it.

4. Ecuador (Quito)

Ecuador is positioned directly on the equator, which usually implies sweltering heat. But Quito sits at a staggering elevation up in the Andes. My first time visiting I did a very light hike in the morning after landing late and was out of breath… and I am in really good shape. The altitude is no joke! But for weather, it is a blessing.

That altitude completely offsets the equatorial sun. The result is a crisp, cool climate where temperatures stay remarkably consistent all year long. It is prime weather for wandering the historic colonial center without breaking a sweat.

• The Highlight: Exploring the 16th-century plazas and admiring the intricate gold-leaf interior of the Compañía de Jesús church.

Tip From The Editor (me): Taking the TelefériQo cable car up the side of the Pichincha Volcano is a must-do, but it drops you off at over 13,000 feet. The air is very thin up there. Take it slow, bring a fleece jacket, and drink plenty of coca tea beforehand to help your body handle the altitude.

5. Costa Rica (Central Valley)

While Costa Rica’s coastlines are undeniably hot and tropical, the interior Central Valley (including the capital, San José, and expat havens like Atenas) offers a completely different climate. 6. South Africa (Cape Town)

Summer (December through March) is warm and sunny but rarely suffocating, while the winter months stay mild and green, usually hovering comfortably in the 60s. The coastal breezes keep the air feeling fresh year-round.

The North Island of New Zealand, particularly around Auckland, benefits from a mild, oceanic climate. You aren’t going to find freezing temperatures, nor will you run into scorching heat waves. Summer temperatures average a very comfortable 68°F, while winters are mild and cool, usually staying around 54°F. It’s ideal for travelers who love being constantly outdoors but hate battling extreme weather.

Tip From The Editor (me): Skip the city traffic for a day and take the 40-minute ferry ride over to Waiheke Island. Rent an e-bike right at the dock. The island is packed with rolling hills and world-class vineyards, and the mild weather makes cruising between wine tastings on a bike an absolute breeze.
