The pristine and picturesque Moraine lake in Banff National Park has become one of the most photographed locations in all of Canada. Its popularity has skyrocketed on Instagram racking up over 120,000 posts tagged “#MoraineLake“. As we've seen before, once the location is famous on Instagram, the crowds will be coming in droves. Expect this summer to be standing room only at the picture perfect lake.
Moraine Lake will Face Big Crowds this Summer
Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake, 14 kilometres outside of Lake Louise in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Once the lake crests in late June it reflects a vibrant blue color that is captured in many of the stunning Instagram photos and videos. The color is due to light reflecting off silt sized particles of rock that are suspended in the waters from glacial erosion.
So Stunning it will seem Surreal
The Lake Moraine water has to be seen in person to be truly appreciated. It's an amazing turquoise colour, that changes in intensity throughout the summer as the glaciers melt. The Lake is surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and rock piles, creating a scene so beautiful it almost seems unreal.
Get an Early Start to Avoid the Crowds
If you want to beat the crowds, set your alarm early and head up to the lake well before 9:00 a.m. By noon the lakeside will be a madhouse and traffic will continue to jam the parking lot and road.
How to get to Moraine Lake
From Lake Louise Village drive uphill on Lake Louise Drive until you see the access road for Moraine Lake on your left. Follow the winding road for 11 kilometers to the parking area. The road to Moraine Lake and the parking lot will be very busy during the summer so expect delays.
