I’ve Been To Over 40 European Countries: Here’s My 4 Favorite For Lush Fall Foliage

Share The Article

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for this sweltering heatwave to finally pass.

Enough of island-hopping around the Maddalena archipelago, gelato by the pier in Amalfi, and toasting in the sun like fried calamari in Menorca.

I’m counting down the days until it’s sweater, fireplace weather, and it’s time to escape to the mountains for some of that crisp, cool air.

I've Been To Over 40 European Countries Here's My 4 Favorite For Lush Fall Foliage

After 8+ years of solo traveling around Europe—and being based in Paris, the much-loved, equally-despised City of Lights—I was bound to have my select few favorites as far as fall getaways go.

If you’re impatient for fall foliage, that coppery sea of pine trees extending as far as the eye can see, and a hot chockie date as it drizzles gently outside, I’ve got it covered for you:

From your favorite Travel Off Path Eurocorrespondent, with 40+ European countries under his belt and a decade’s worth of years living in Paris to back it up, here’s my top 4 all-time favorite European autumnal escapes.

Scotland

Scottish Highlands
Loch Faskally In The Scottish Highlands, Scotland

Everyone flocks to Scotland to witness the Gothic spires of Edinburgh, or if they’re devoted Potterheads, the Harry Potter-featured Glenfinnan Viaduct in person, but the main reason why I keep getting drawn back to the Land of the Gaels year after year is the vast, untamed wilderness that is the Highlands.

Stretching from Fort William all the way north to Thurso, with countless rugged islands and sea lochs lying just offshore, this vast wilderness offers epic Munro hikes, misty lochs, dramatic castles perched atop vertiginous coastal cliffs, and some of the dreamiest fall scenery you could possibly ask for.

Glen Coe is what I like to call the European Banff:

Think huge mountains, moody valleys, pristine waterfalls emptying into glassy basins, and that endless burnt-orange woodland that looks almost surreal. Bidean nam Bian is particularly spectacular in the fall, and if you’ve brought your camping gear along, there’s plenty of wild camping spots in the area.

Eilean Donan Castle In The Fall, Scotland

You’ll literally be sleeping beneath the fall colors.

Then there’s the Cairngorms, a national park best for that classic Highland wilderness. Loch Morlich is surrounded by golden birch and russet foliage, and over in Glenmore, you’ll find enormous swathes of birch and pine that turn almost copper at sunset, backdropped by those jagged mountains.

My favorite Scottish fall hideaway, however? That has to be the Isle of Skye, a rugged island accessible by a causeway bridge, known for its windswept grassland, colorful harbor towns, and crystal-clear Fairy Pools.

Italy

The Dolomites
Autumn Foliage In The Dolomites, Italy

You probably know Italy for the pastel-hued coastal towns, the crazy traffic, and the endless maze of narrow alleys framed by overhanging laundry. What if I tell you there’s a different side of Italy more closely related to the Germanic world than it is to the Mediterranean south altogether?

The Dolomites are a rugged range of alpine mountains that traverses northern Italy, separating the Italian Alps from Austria, though if you dig deeper, you’d be surprised to find they actually share a lot more in common with Austria than with Rome or Naples.

Up here, it’s all about snow-capped mountain massifs, lakes of an impossible blue-green, wooden chalets and solitary Baroque chapels adorned with Germanic motifs and architecture that could, well, easily belong in Austria. Oh, and of course, it sees fall foliage like no other.

Lago Di Braies In The Dolomites, Italy

Val di Funes is where you go for lazy afternoons munching on smoked sausage, dipping bread into melted mountain cheese, and wandering through rolling meadows.

Alpe di Siusi is a literal hiker’s paradise, though you won’t find me attempting one of those terrifying via ferrata anytime soon: catch me instead relaxing by Lago di Fiè, enjoying a cup of hot chocolate with views of the dramatic Sciliar massif.

My Dolomitian coup de cœur, you ask? That has to be Lago di Braies, a ridiculous alpine lake I wouldn’t have believed wasn’t AI until I saw it with my own eyes.

Emerald-green waters, every imaginable shade of gold and crimson trees reflecting on the glassy surface, and towering peaks that seem to touch the sky.

Slovenia

The Julian Alps
Lake Bled In Slovenia During Autumn

Slovenia’s a pretty offbeat destination as it is—you can consider yourself well-versed in Europe if you can pinpoint Ljubljana on a map—but take a short detour from the country’s fairytale medieval capital to the lesser-known Julian Alps, and that’s when things get seriously good.

Even if Slovenia never exactly made your European bucket list, I’ll bet my bottom dollar you’ve seen Lake Bled on a postcard before:

It’s that serene lake with a church-islet at its center, fringed by forested peaks, one of which hosts a medieval castle.

That’s good enough reason to pack your bags and head to Slovenia like, yesterday, but wait until you’ve seen the misty fog rolling over the lake on a crisp October morning, or how the foliage on the trees turns to a deep amber once the scorching summer’s over.

Charming Medieval Village On Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Bled is not a mere photo-op, either: it’s a full-blown lakeside resort and town, dotted with boutique stays and restaurants that cost a fraction of those in Switzerland and Austria, so you’re effectively getting the same scenery and vibes for roughly 40% less.

For an even quieter, wilder, more secluded lake, Bohinj is where you go for complete peace and quiet: picture dense forests that turn gold and orange, wooden piers stretching over glassy water, and rustic taverns that have been in the same family for generations.

Wanna take this thing uphill? Kranjska Gora is a laid-back mountain retreat perched above pine forests, and the starting point for numerous trails winding up jagged peaks. Just like the Dolomites, only on a much smaller scale.

  • Radovljica: an overlooked gem with cobbled lanes and sweeping views towards the Alps
  • Škofja Loja: Slovenia’s best-preserved medieval town, home to a charming, café-lined old square
Best Parks & Nature
  • Lake Bled: the entire woodland surrounding Bled is made up of crimson forests and snow-capped peaks
  • Lake Bohinj: an autumn lake framed by forests and soaring limestone elevations
  • Llogar Valley: an under-the-radar alpine hideaway covered in fire-toned woodland
  • Soča Valley: emerald-green rivers, golden forests, and cascading waterfalls

Spain

Picos de Europa
Picos de Europa In Spain During Autumn

Think of Picos de Europa as Spain’s answer to the Alps… just wilder, even more rural, and far less polished. You could easily spend a whole week bouncing between mountains and glacial lakes, but if you’re short on time this fall, Fuente Dé is probably the one stop you shouldn’t miss.

It has the huge limestone cliffs, the golden beech forests, and the Fuente Dé cable car takes you from the valley floor up to 6,000 feet, with sweeping views of mountains below.

Fall in Europe is not only about foliage and hikes, though: Cangas de Onís is one of the prettiest villages in Picos de Europa, if not Spain as a whole. It has a charming stone-built Old Town, and the iconic ancient bridge that spans the Sella River dates back to Roman times.

The colorful autumn hills only add to the rustic charm, and if you’re craving some of that hearty Spanish mountain food, El Molín de la Pedrera serves some truly spectacular fabada asturiana.

Pair it with local cider, and you’re in for a proper Asturian feast.

Santiago may get all the fame as the home of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, but Covadonga, a tiny village in the heart of Picos de Europa, is an understated Christian pilgrimage site that’s even more atmospheric.

The basilica is surrounded by amber-hued forests, and pilgrims come here to visit the Holy Cave of Covadonga, where tradition holds that Pelagius began the Christian Reconquest of Spain.

Can’t get enough of the mountains and those fiery fall colors? Sotres is Spain’s highest village, a scenic drive from Covadonga. It’s surrounded by mountain pastures, where hardy cows munch on lush grass right by alpine lakes, and it truly feels like a remote Highland village rather than a Spanish mountain town, proper.

Best City/Town Breaks
Covadonga Basilica, Spain
  • Cangas de Onís: a historic mountain town with a rich Roman heritage and an iconic stone bridge over the Sella River
  • Potes: a picture-perfect medieval town surrounded by vineyards, wooded hills, and towering limestone peaks
  • Covadonga: a tiny pilgrimage village tucked beneath the mountains, best known for its historic basilica and Holy Cave
  • Sotres: Spain’s highest village at around 3,800 feet above sea level, surrounded by alpine pastures and dramatic mountains
Best Parks & Nature
  • Fuente Dé: the most dramatic Picos scenery, and the closest to Switzerland you’ll feel this far south
  • Lagos de Covadonga: a string of pristine mountain lakes surrounded by jagged peaks and fiery fall foliage
  • Cares Gorge: a hiking route carved through enormous cliffs, with golden beech forests clinging to the valley walls
  • Valle de Valdeón: a little-visited valley peppered with stone villages and sweeping mountain pastures
How Safe Is Spain Right Now?

Spain scores 93 out of 100 on the Traveler Safety Index, based on reports from recent visitors:

Insider Tips

👉 Stay in Parador de Cangas de Onís, a gorgeous former monastery turned historic hotel, under the looming shape of foliage-clad mountains—$150/night

👉 There aren’t many nonstop flights from the U.S. to Asturias, so the easiest gateways are either Bilbao Airport (BIO), around 80 miles from Cangas de Onís, or Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ), around 180 miles away. Both have nonstop flights from Newark as of this year.
