The South’s 3 Most Underrated Beach Getaways For A Spring Vacation

Share The Article

Wanna know a travel secret that's surprisingly still a secret?

You don't have to go to Florida for an amazing beach vacation in the South.

This is not yet another travel publication puff piece you've likely come across before — you know, the ones that hype up the good while glossing over the bad.

Every place has its downsides. In this case, swaths of the South miss out on Florida's Atlantic side.

But the Gulf isn't nearly as unpleasant as some make it out to be, unless you stepped on a dirty diaper like I did in Galveston — then it becomes a hard sell.

At Travel Off Path, we prefer the full picture. So let's take a deep dive into 3 of the South's unsung charmers and stunners that leave Florida's unsightly crowds in the dust.

Holly Beach: Yes, Louisiana Has Beautiful Beaches!

Louisiana is a wild place.

One of my many weekend joys is switching my phone to ‘Do Not Disturb' and watching my favorite vlog Dat Louisiana Life, about a family enjoying an off-grid life on a houseboat in the scenic swamplands riddled with gators and other critters.

What you rarely hear about, though, are the very few Louisiana beaches lining its lesser-known shoreline.

In fact, it's safe to say many Americans don't realize the “Bayou State” has a coastline at all, instead envisioning muddy waterways with modern-day dinosaurs and Mardi Gras shenanigans on world-famous Bourbon Street.

The reality is Louisiana has its own underrated beach escape in Holly Beach, a homegrown favorite that beats venturing next door to Texas to risk stepping on a squishy diaper…

Hidden just across the Texas-Louisiana state line lies a map-dot oasis known as the “Cajun Riviera”, making for one of the South's most rewarding road-trip destinations with beachside RV parks, virtually no crowds in sight, and stilt homes for rent rather than flashy eyesore resorts.

And yes — you can drive on the beach, and while the water isn’t typically postcard-clear, it’s a lot better than many skeptics assume.

Bay St. Louis: Mississippi's Blissful Bayside Hideaway

Mississippi has been such a hot commodity, I can almost spell “Mississippi” without counting my S's and P's at this point, since we've covered their gleaming white beach towns so often.

One day…

Bay St. Louis is the best of both worlds, blending small-town charm with white-sand beach days.

Yes, Mississippi's water isn't exactly snorkelable. However, there are myriad reasons why this trendy town has become one of the South's fastest-growing getaways.

Of course, the most timely reason would be Amtrak's Mardi Gras route, where you can hop around the Mississippi Sound in between Mobile and New Orleans.

Bay St. Louis is a must-visit, even if you choose not to chug along here and fly into nearby Gulfport instead.

With serene beaches, spring breakers overlook, and a charming townscape speckled with down-home eateries and cozy inns, you've found your next relaxing escape, while others may dread the more popular beach locale they chose.

Plus, after a couple of daiquiris at local favorite Daiquiri Shak, if you squint, the soft white sand passes for Siesta Key.

Don't ask me how I know…

Corpus Christi: Texas Beaches Actually Worth Visiting

Corpus Christi Cathedral backdropped by palm trees

Last on our Tour de South jaunt is Corpus Christi, the largest destination on our list.

Mixed with equal parts urban delights and surrounding paradise beaches that truly are just as pretty as some of Florida's top escapes, don't sleep on Corpus as your next sunny vacay.

In fact, this underrated city is slowly but surely making its way back up the travel ranks as it recently added its first new flight in nearly 3 decades.

That's almost my whole life, but we don't have to talk about that…

Corpus's downtown district has undergone extensive renovations, giving this once-overlooked city center a much-needed jolt away from the main attractions, USS Lexington and Texas Aquarium.

2026 is a great time to visit not just because of the impending water ‘crisis' (uh-oh!), but also because it still lies well below the radar for vacationers craving sun and sand outside of Texas.

But it's super fun. There's even a pirate festival that takes over downtown.

And that's why I'll be there in May, matey!

That said, Corpus is an amazing gateway to Texas's best beaches, including Mustang Island and Port Aransas, both worthy of visiting their sprawling open space and often clear waters no matter where you're coming from.
