Why This Caribbean Island Is Already Breaking Visitor Records For 2026

Sometimes, certain places hold so much recognition that we book trips as if we're on “auto-pilot”.

But numerous tourism reports are revealing that more travelers are trickling away from household names in favor of the lesser-known.

In this case, this particular paradise island isn't exactly unknown, but nowhere near the level of fame of travel darlings like Punta Cana and Montego Bay.

Resort in Cayman Islands

With new flights, fun cruises, and equally stunning beaches, statistics show Americans are the driving force behind the surprising vacation boom already breaking records this year.

While winter is all but wrapped up, we at Travel Off Path believe the Caribbean's new hotspot is just as appealing, if not more, during spring with perfect pre-hurricane season weather, no rowdy spring break crowds, and high likelihood to score better resort rates.

Cayman Islands: Americans' New Favorite Beach Escape

With nearly 50,000 stay-over visits in January alone, a huge chunk of this new record is Americans simply looking to escape blistering cold winters at home.

Many came from the Midwest, and rightfully, given constant bone-chilling weather reports across the region.

But, why the Cayman Islands?

This British Caribbean territory is a place to treat yourself without the chaos. Let's face it — not all resort destinations are what they're cracked up to be.

Pristine white-sand beach - Grand Cayman

Maybe the adults-only pool still has screaming kids or a sargassum invasion ruins the paradisal beach day you planned after spending hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

The Cayman Islands are a safe bet.

With long stretches of gorgeous coastline like popular Seven Mile Beach, easygoing island vibes and some of the Caribbean’s best diving, it's easy to see why travelers are flocking here.

Of course, it helps that it's more connected than you might think. Getting here became easier than ever in 2025, especially with new routes from Fort Lauderdale, Detroit, and expanded seat capacity from Detroit and Chicago.

One Of Caribbean's Safest Destinations

Turn on the news lately, and the world feels like it's tipped on its side.

All the more reason for a vacation, right?

While a majority of the Caribbean is deemed safe with the exception of Haiti, Cuba, Trinidad & Tobago, and who knows about Venezuela these days, the Cayman Islands have long been a tax haven, but a safe haven for vacationers craving a stress-free getaway.

According to our very own Traveler Safety Index, reporting real-time data from travelers like you, The Cayman Islands holds a high safety score of 85/100, while Grand Cayman (the main island), is sticking it to the rest of the island with 90/100.

For what it's worth, the U.S. State Department currently designates the island as ‘Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions', the lowest possible designation.

Cruises Are Booming Too

Despite some weather-related cancellations (hey, it happens), Cayman's cruise scene is booming as well.

Of course, flying versus cruising has its pros and cons, but nearly 200,000 cruisers visited the main island in January.

There are over 50 ships travelers can choose from, no matter if you're departing from the U.S., Canada, or even the UK.

Will Sargassum Ruin Your Trip?

Take it from someone whose first Cancun vacation was plagued with icky beaches invaded by an unprecedented amount of sargassum (brown algae), a little research goes a long way.

One reason winter is primetime for a Caribbean vacation is that you're all but guaranteed to experience pristine beaches free of unsightly seaweed.

Sargassum-Filled Beach

According to The Weather Channel, the Cayman Islands may see some wash-up this spring, but it is not located in prime areas affected by this vacation-ruining natural phenomenon.

2026 is expected to be a heavy sargassum year overall. Cayman wasn't singled out like Barbados, Dominica, the French Antilles, and the Mexican Caribbean.

It appears you'd experience minimal eyesores along what's typically powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters across all 3 islands:

  • Grand Cayman
  • Cayman Brac
  • Little Cayman

Cayman Airways Making Their Presence Known

Cayman Airways airplane

One of the most game-changing flights this spring just so happens to be the Caymans' flagship carrier, Cayman Airways.

Austin is set to receive the city's only nonstop Caribbean island flight this spring:

  • Launching May 4
  • Sundays only
  • Seasonal route ending August 16

Cayman Airways may not typically be your go-to airline, but it's certified as a 3-star airline by SkyTrax.

Onboard, passengers can enjoy in-flight entertainment via Sir Turtle Entertainment, signature Rum Punch tasting, free seat assignments, meals included with airfare, and what's claimed to be the ‘most generous checked bag allowance in the industry'.
