7 Reasons Why Mexico City Is My Favorite Place For A Weekend Getaway

Sometimes we have a strong desire to go somewhere but are short on time. That can make picking a destination even more challenging.

You don’t want to spend all your vacation time in the skies, so you have to narrow down your list to somewhere relatively close.

Europe is probably out of the question. Hawaii might be a little too far. Some Caribbean spots might be worthwhile, but what about the biggest city in North America?

That would be Ciudad de Mexico, more commonly known as Mexico City. This thriving metropolis will leave travelers wanting more, and that’s why I always keep coming back.

I recently wrapped up my sixth trip to this amazing city, and my cup still isn’t full. Here are 7 reasons why Mexico City is my favorite place for a weekend getaway:

Easy Access

Mexico City is located toward the center of Mexico, so it’s reasonable to say it’s less than a 4-and-a-half-hour direct flight from many American airports.

Most major U.S. carriers (and Air Canada) fly direct to Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez (MEX).

Once you land, it’s super easy to get to the city center. Walk outside, make a left, and hop on the subway for less than a dollar.

Cheap airfare + cheap transportation to take me straight to the heart of a breathtaking city is well money spent if you ask me.

It’s “Taco Tuesday” All Day Everyday

If you come to Mexico City without eating tacos, particularly street tacos, you’re doing it wrong! You would have to walk around blindfolded not to notice how many taco stands are placed around the city.

They are everywhere, and most are usually busy, which is a good sign they are delicious and safe to consume.

At home, it’s common to find restaurants with a “Taco Tuesday” special. In Mexico City, that is just everyday life.

Street vendors typically offer fresh, affordable tacos of different varieties. My personal favorite is a toss-up between Al Pastor and Suadero.

So Many Neighborhoods To Explore

Mexico City is so big that I have been 6 times and always find somewhere new to explore. Many travelers find themselves in the touristy area known as the Zocalo, with eye-popping architecture, high-end retail, and a variety of restaurants.

For me, I love passing through the Zocalo and using that as my compass to venture off somewhere else.

During my last trip, I wandered off a side street nearby after seeing some unexpected Chinese lanterns and found myself in the middle of a quaint Chinatown (Barrio Chino) that I instantly fell in love with.

Fresh, tasty dumplings were being made in the narrow alleyway along cool shops to check out within a 2-block radius.

Great Weather Year-Round

As one would suspect, I get bit by the travel bug year-round. No matter which month it is, you don’t have to think twice about visiting Mexico City.

Some months you can wear shorts, others it might be best to pack a sweater, but it will never be overwhelmingly hot as it’s not a beach destination.

According to Weather Spark, Mexico City varies between 43 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Rarely does it go below 37 or higher than 86.

Value

Mexico City is a fun place to spend a late night out on the weekend. You don’t have to break the bank doing so.

In a ritzy neighborhood such as Polanco, visitors can enjoy the finer things in life and not worry as much about the bill as they would in a similar establishment in the U.S.

All of the same food, drinks, and entertainment in the States — you can enjoy at a better price here. Traffic can be a major problem, but the subway and Uber are great ways to get around.

The subway is very efficient and it’s easy to read the maps provided at each station. Ubers are relatively cheap; it’s just best not to take them during rush hour.

Easy To Stay Busy

There is always something fun or interesting to do or see. Whether it’s taking a train down to the scenic town of Xochimilico for a one-of-a-kind boat ride or getting lost in a bustling market, your mind will be occupied.

Mexico City will keep you busy, and you will be able to make the most of your time without worrying about your stresses at home. That’s the reason for a weekend getaway, right?

Safety

Statistically, Mexico City is a very safe destination. Petty crime can happen anywhere, but I have been out at all hours and have never felt unsafe or seen any violence.

Currently, the U.S. State Department has Mexico City listed as Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, aligning with many other popular destinations.
