If you had to guess which European country’s tourism is on course for a record-breaking summer, Denmark might not be the first place that comes to mind.
But that looks likely to happen, according to a report by the Copenhagen Post, which predicts that overnight stays in the Scandinavian country will increase by 4% on 2022’s record figure.
Travelers are flocking to Denmark thanks to its pleasant summer climate, rich history, unique culture, and more affordable nature compared to nearby nations such as Norway.
Here’s why Denmark is such a great underrated destination for travelers:
A Capital Of Culture
Copenhagen has likely been on every traveler’s bucket list at some point.
At the heart of the city lies Rosenborg Castle, which holds 400 years of Danish royal history within its walls – it’s also the home of the country’s crown jewels.
Another iconic sight is the Rundetaarn or Round Tower. Originally built for astronomy in the 17th Century, today you can ascend the tower’s winding walkway to reach the roof for fantastic views over the city and the Øresund (the strait between Denmark and Sweden).
And all this is before you consider classics such as the Little Mermaid Statue and Tivoli Gardens.
It’s Accessible For American Travelers
Copenhagen may not be the biggest airport in Europe, but it is surprisingly well-served by many airlines.
You can fly there directly from major U.S. cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, and Washington D.C.
If you can’t find a direct flight, then nearby Hamburg in northern Germany is a great option with solid train links to Copenhagen.

Escape Europe’s Summer Heat
With Southern Europe sweltering in record temperatures and suffering devastating forest fires, the milder yet still pleasant summer climate of Denmark is attracting many tourists.
Summer temperatures usually sit between 55F and 65F, with an average of eight hours of sunshine a day from May through to July.
This agreeable summer weather has helped make Denmark more popular than ever this year.
Getting Around Is Easy
Denmark is a small nation. In fact, it is smaller than the state of West Virginia, which makes getting around to see the sights relatively straightforward.
By road is often the easiest way, but Denmark also has an extensive railway network that allows you to traverse from one side of the country to the other in a matter of hours.
The journey time by train from Copenhagen to the city of Aalborg in the north takes under five hours.
Another great way to get around is by bicycle. The country has excellent cycling infrastructure both in the cities and the countryside, making this affordable transport method a safe option.
Underrated Natural Beauty
Away from the urban settings, Denmark has some very pretty nature and countryside to enjoy.
While it is known for being flat, you can experience some dramatic hills and stunning white cliffs down in the very southeast of the country at Møns Klint.
There are also plenty of scenic inland lakes, and you can even go island hopping in the archipelagos of the south and east – Bornholm Island is a particularly beautiful natural gem.
Pretty and Peaceful Beaches
West Jutland on Denmark’s west coast is a haven for white sandy beaches and clean seas.
Søndervig Beach is a favorite among Danes and is skirted by dramatic sand dunes that also provide shelter from the wind.
Another West Jutland beauty spot is Blåvand Beach, which is a secluded and quiet place where you can spot wildlife such as seals and sea birds.
Danish Design
Good design is another thing Denmark is known for, and you will see evidence of its clean, minimalist, and simple style everywhere.
Away from that classic vision of Danish design, you may notice what the Danes call Hygge.
This term describes a mood of safe comfort and warm satisfaction and has become a modern design trend in current Danish culture.
