Endless sunshine, stunning beaches, and a laidback atmosphere are just a few of the reasons why San Diego is surging in popularity among American travelers right now.
According to recent data from Google Destination Insights, searches for flights and hotels in San Diego are up 25% right now, making it the trendiest destination in the United States.
Here's why San Diego is so popular with American travelers (and why now is the perfect time to visit!)
New Nonstop Flights
Let's talk about one of the biggest reasons why San Diego is trending right now — there are tons of nonstop flights to this sunny SoCal city from destinations all over the United States.
And many of these flights are affordable too, with a large presence of budget airlines.
For example, low-cost carrier Breeze Airways just launched five new routes to San Diego from cities like Jacksonville, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh this month.
Spirit Airlines also launched new routes to San Diego, and Alaska Airlines will expand service this fall.
So it's easier than ever before for travelers to get to San Diego.
Year-Round Great Weather
You also have year-round great weather in San Diego.
As much as I love the beaches of Florida, the weather can actually be way too hot and humid during the summer months. But that's not the case in San Diego.
Even during the hottest months of summer, the average high in San Diego is only 77° F.
And you don't risk summer storms here as you do in Florida — it rains very little in San Diego year-round, but summer is when you have almost zero chance of rain.
This makes San Diego ideal to visit any time of year, including this summer. But it's also the perfect sunny and warm getaway for fall or even winter.
Amazing Beaches
How can you talk about San Diego without mentioning the beaches? You'll find some of the best beaches in California in and around San Diego.
With more than 70 miles of beaches, you're guaranteed to find the perfect spot, whether you're looking for a surfing beach or a peaceful beach where you can just chill out and soak up the sun.
La Jolla Cove, Coronado Beach, and Mission Beach are a few of the best beaches in San Diego.
There are also some great beachfront hotels in San Diego so you can be just steps away from the ocean.
Delicious Food
San Diego is a foodie paradise with so many delicious types of cuisine to enjoy.
One of the biggest is Mexican — being located just 20 miles north of Tijuana, Mexico, it's no surprise that San Diego has amazing Mexican food.
Tacos are a big hit in San Diego, and you can't leave the city without trying tacos from Puesto and The Taco Stand.
Seafood is also popular in San Diego and you always know that what you're getting here is fresh!
One of the best things to try is oysters from Ironside Fish & Oyster. Or go for the ceviche, a classic Peruvian seafood dish with a San Diego twist.
Historical And Cultural Attractions
More than just fantastic beaches and yummy food, San Diego is also a city with some really great historical and cultural attractions too.
Balboa Park is one of the top tourist destinations in the city, and for good reason. It opened in 1868, making it the oldest park dedicated to public use and recreation in the country.
It's home to multiple museums, gardens, and other attractions like the San Diego Zoo.
And you can also take a really cool day trip from San Diego to another country: Tijuana, Mexico is only a 35-minute drive away, giving you the unique opportunity to head south of the border for an afternoon.
