There are many reasons to plan out an epic beach trip.

Some of us want to party, some of us want to get our tan on, and others just want to relax with a cold drink in hand, staring out into the abyss.

If there's one common denominator, we want our beaches clean, affordable, and the less crowded the better.

Beach in San Agustin

Not every destination hits the mark, but there is one lesser-known paradise local Europeans love to visit for a blissful beach getaway.

Although not as common for Americans, yet not hard to reach at all, the lovely resort town of San Agustin of Spain's gorgeous Canary Islands is the perfect affordable vacation spot to avoid the crowds.

Gran Canaria's Paradisal Hideaway

Spain just seems to be getting better and better.

Between cultural cities, a stunning coastline, and even more incredible islands dispersed across the sea, the Canary Islands may be the most overlooked as they're closer to Africa than mainland Europe.

Many travelers visit Mallorca and Ibiza, but your next island escape for a dose of sunny Spanish seaside should be Gran Canaria.

The beaches are stunning to say the least, but one of the southernmost coastal towns of the island is your best bet for a tranquil vacation away from the Speedo-wearing sunbathers.

Welcome To San Agustin

For most, your entry into Gran Canaria will be the capital city of Las Palmas, not to be confused with Palma on another Spanish island.

Nonetheless, visiting any of Spain's islands is an awesome experience, no matter which one you choose. It's time to shine a light on Gran Canaria's most underrated beach town.

Right now, it feels as if summer has already begun with warm weather perfectly suited for dreamy beach days, and temps will rise even more during the summer months.

Tourists have an array of resorts to choose from, many of them set beachside. Best of all, vacationing here won't break the bank, as resorts are often found in the $100s per night.

Going out about town won't hurt your wallet either, as a local brewski only costs a few bucks, and fun water activities like snorkeling and renting beach chairs are under $10.

Hotel in San Agustin

Sleepy By Day, Buzzing At Night

One of San Agustin's top rated hotels is named B'SLOW, which is no coincidence. The allure of San Agustin's quiet beaches and culture are to enjoy the simple things in life at a slower pace.

But hey, we're all human and love to turn up every now and then. San Augustin has you covered here too.

An ideal trip to San Agustin looks like this:

  • Grab a coffee at a waterfront cafe
  • Spend hours on a gorgeous beach, such as Playa De Las Burras or Playa del Ingles
  • Grab a bite to eat at one of the many fresh seafood vendors
  • Go for a stroll along the scenic Strandpromenade
  • Make your way to the incredible Maspalomas sand dunes before a night out

The nightlife scene is a top attraction but doesn't get too crazy. Overall, this resort town is very family friendly with PG-level dancing and live music performances.

Reaching This Stunning Island

Not only is San Agustin affordable for a nice stay and seeing all the sites, but getting here won't stretch your budget either.

Fortunately, mainland Spain is typically one of the cheapest gateways into Europe from the U.S. through multiple airlines, but perhaps no more than Spain's budget carrier, LEVEL.

If you fly into Madrid or Barcelona, a connecting flight to Gran Canaria is usually pretty cheap. While Ryanair certainly has some interesting reviews, a penny saved is a penny earned, right?

One of Europe's most notorious airlines offers flights as low as $75 this summer for one of Europe's best beach getaways to avoid the crowds.

Gran Canaria is a bit old school and doesn't offer Uber, but a taxi should run no more than $45 from the airport or you can hop on a bus for about $5.

When considering the French Riviera, Greek Islands, or even the jam-packed strobe light crowds of Ibiza, one of your best values and best experiences is right here in San Agustin.
