The day many have been waiting for has finally arrived: The Canadian government has just announced that on August 9th, fully vaccinated U.S. citizens will be able to visit Canada.
Vaccinated travelers from all other countries will be allowed to visit Canada starting on September 7th.
U.S. Travelers Can Visit Canada Starting On August 9th
After almost 16 months of being closed to non-essential travel, the Canada U.S. border will reopen on August 9th for U.S. travelers, provided that Canada's COVID-19 epidemiology remains favorable.
Despite a slow start, Canada is now leading G20 countries in vaccination rates, with almost 80% of eligible Canadians vaccinated with their first dose and over 50% fully vaccinated.
Given the situation, the Canadian government announced today that fully vaccinated Americans can visit Canada on August 9th.
“On August 9, 2021, at 12:01 a.m. EDT, fully vaccinated citizens and permanent residents of the United States (U.S.), currently residing in the U.S., will be permitted to enter Canada for discretionary (non-essential) travel,” Canada said in a statement.
For U.S. travelers who are not fully vaccinated, entry to Canada will continue to be prohibited. The government has previously said that it will be ‘quite a while' before unvaccinated travelers are allowed in the country.
The news is a long time coming, as the Canada-U.S. border closure has been extended month over month, despite immense pressure from both sides to open.
Currently, Canadians can visit the U.S. by air with a negative Covid-19 test but cannot enter by land as the border has been closed for non-essential travel.
The U.S. government has not yet announced if this will change for Canadians given today's news, but they have set up an expert working group to resume international travel so an announcement is expected to be made soon.
Canada Will Welcome All Other Travelers On September 7th
In the statement, the government said that they intend to allow fully vaccinated travelers from any country to enter on September 7th, provided the situation remains favorable throughout the summer. Entry to the country will be denied to travelers who are not fully vaccinated.
What Is Required To Enter Canada?
To enter Canada, American citizens and permanent residents must have received the full series of a vaccine – or combination of vaccines – accepted by the Government of Canada at least 14 days prior to entering.
Currently, those vaccines are manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson).
Other vaccines, including those from China or Russia, will not be recognized. Officials say they are continuing to “look into it” and will announce policy changes accordingly.
Unvaccinated minors younger than 12 entering Canada with vaccinated parents or guardians will not have to quarantine for 14 days.
Travelers must have a paper or digital copy of their vaccination documentation in English or French, provide COVID-19-related information electronically through ArriveCAN, meet pre-entry testing requirements (a negative Covid-19 test), and be asymptomatic upon arrival.
Air carriers will be verifying that the travelers coming to Canada have submitted their information digitally by using the ArriveCAN app or website before they board their flight.
As of August 9th, airlines will no longer be required to take the temperature of boarding passengers for both domestic and international flights.
All travelers must still present a suitable quarantine plan and be prepared to quarantine, should they not meet all of the conditions required to be exempt from quarantine.
Fully vaccinated travelers will not need a post-arrival test unless they have been randomly selected to complete a Day 1 COVID-19 molecular test.
Hotel Quarantine Will End On August 9th
In the statement, the government also announced that the controversial 3-day hotel quarantine established earlier this year will end on August 9th, which currently applies to unvaccinated Canadian residents.
Unvaccinated residents returning to Canada will still need to complete a mandatory 14-day quarantine with day 1 and Day 8 Covid-19 molecular tests.
