Sometimes travelers are laser focused on visiting the must-see's, while others keep their eyes peeled forging into the lesser-known ready to discover delightful hidden gems.

When it comes to Europe, visiting the icons of Paris, Barcelona, and Rome makes for unforgettable trips, but there is still so much to be desired throughout the continent.

As we have revealed more and more new flights and thrilling train routes, there's no doubt Europe is calling your name this summer, but where should you go?

Having been myself, Slovakia should top your wishlist. You can leave nearby Vienna and the powerhouses of London and Paris for the shameless splurgers while getting incredible value in this underrated country.

Home to breathtaking castles, picturesque cobblestones, and teeming with Old Town charm, these are 3 affordable Slovak cities:

The Eye-Popping City That Surprised Me The Most: Beautiful Bratislava

Bratislava Castle overlooking scenic Danube River

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Bratislava on a whim, a last-minute throw-in on my typical unplanned itinerary.

After overpaying for food and accommodations in Vienna for a couple days, I looked at a map to scope out my next move and instantly noticed how easy it was to venture across Slovakian borders.

A short FlixBus ride later, I was being wowed in a city I had quite honestly never heard of before.

Welcomed by the city's unmissable, yet odd, UFO themes, timeless castles, quirky art scene had me mesmerized as I explored the charming cobbled streets by foot.

Hands down, Bratislava surprised me the most in all my European escapades. Perhaps best of all, it's cheap!

And you're not sacrificing boredom for savings like some cities (no offense, Sofia!).

Here is what I personally recommend in Bratislava:

  • Tour Bratislava Castle (close on Tuesdays)
  • Eat at Slovak Pub for traditional Slovak cuisine (great local wine selection too!)
  • Wander Old Town for fun photo-ops with off-the-wall art sculptures
  • Stay at Hostel Old Town for the most spacious private hostel room and welcoming staff I've encountered

Košice: Unveiling Europe's Last Frontier

Aerial view of Kosice's main square and rolling hills

After getting a taste, both literally and figuratively, of Slovakia in Bratislava, I couldn't help but wonder what else this often-overlooked country has to offer.

While I couldn't squeeze in any more Slovakian adventures during this trip, it's been burning in the back of my mind ever since.

The good news is treasured like Kosice, Slovakia's second-largest city, are now easier than ever to visit.

Europe's famed budget airline Ryanair has launched flights connecting this vastly unexplored side of Eastern Europe from cities like London, Dublin, and Prague.

Speaking of Prague, you can now also hop aboard a new train connecting Prague all the way to Ukraine – yes, really!

Don't let sweat it, however. Kosice is a stopping point along the way. Yet, given Kosice's location an hour and a half from conflict-ridden Ukraine, it's safe to say this region is Europe's final frontier.

But, if you visit Poland, another country neighboring Ukraine, you shouldn't stray away from Kosice either.

Kosice is perfectly safe and will blow your mind with its endless beauty and historic, medieval charm.

Come for the culture, stay for the halusky (dumplings), and stretch your travel budget all while exploring this vastly underrated destination teeming with charming streets and lush Summer scenery.

And while summer's in full swing, Košice is a great city to plan out a future winter adventure. Their Christmas market is truly epic.

Bardejov: A Cheap Town Steeped in Charming Architectural Splendor

If you haven't heard of Kosice, odds increase even more you that haven't heard of Bardejov either.

Protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Berdajov's Old Town Center alone is worth the journey to absorb the historic blends of Gothic, Renaissance, and architectural styles.

With no airport, your best options are flying into Kosice and double dipping with this pair of Slovak gems or Krakow, as well.

Either way, Bardejov is easy to reach by FlixBus from either point. Tucked away off-the-beaten path, this old-timey town is deeply rooted in traditions still showcased today with lively festivals held throughout the year, such as the upcoming Bardejov Fair (Last weekend of August).

Stays and attractions are very affordable, like centrally located B&B Albi for just $69 in August, and the towering Bardejov Basilica, free to enter.
