When you start dreaming about a tropical getaway to Central America, your mind probably jumps straight to Costa Rica or Belize.
For a long time, almost everyone completely skipped over El Salvador. When I told my friends and family I was heading there, the very first question out of everyone's mouth was: “Is it actually safe?” It had a rough reputation in the past, so people just assumed it wasn't an option for a relaxing beach vacation.
But things have completely changed on the ground. El Salvador has turned over a new leaf, and right now, the country is throwing its doors wide open and encouraging travelers to come check out its gorgeous coastline.
If you want an epic beach trip that is still a total hidden gem, here is why El Salvador needs to be at the absolute top of your list.
It is Officially Safer Than You Think
Let’s address the elephant in the room right away: safety. You want to focus on catching waves and eating good food, not nervously looking over your shoulder.
The security turnaround here is a massive deal, and it completely blew me away how safe and peaceful it felt.
Our traveler-voted Safety Index currently ranks El Salvador at a fantastic 85 out of 100, making it the safest country in Central America right now.
Don't just take my word for it, either. The U.S. State Department officially ranks El Salvador as a Level 1 destination.
That is the safest possible rating the government gives out—putting it in the same safety tier as places like Japan and Iceland! It means you only need to use normal travel precautions.
The tourist areas are heavily protected, so you can let your worries melt away and travel with total peace of mind.

A Hidden Gem Waiting to Be Explored
Because people are just starting to realize how secure the country is, El Salvador is still flying completely under the radar.
You won't find massive cruise ship crowds, giant tourist traps, or endless lines here. Instead, you get a raw, authentic adventure before it goes totally mainstream.

The country features nearly 200 miles of beautiful Pacific coastline packed with unique black volcanic sand beaches.
Towns like El Tunco and La Libertad are world-famous in the surfing community for having some of the best waves on earth.
Best of all? It is an incredibly affordable place to travel.
You can spend your days hanging out on uncrowded beaches and eating delicious local pupusas without draining your bank account.

My Experience on the Coast
When I visited El Salvador, I stayed at a gorgeous place called Mizata along the coast, and the vibe was incredible.
The volcanic black-sand beaches are stunning, especially when the sun starts to set.
The waves right outside the resort are absolutely perfect for learning how to surf, too.

I took my very first surfing lesson there and actually managed to stand up on the board on my first try!
It is the exact kind of welcoming, low-stress environment that makes you feel right at home.
Catch the Secret Before it Gets Out
El Salvador is on a mission to show the world how beautiful it is, and the locals are genuinely excited to welcome new visitors.
Booking a trip here right now is like getting in on a massive secret before the rest of the world catches on.
If you want a safe, affordable, and totally unique tropical adventure, El Salvador is waiting for you with open arms.

Only those who have endured poverty, violence, and war truly comprehend the profound transformation this small yet mighty nation has undergone. While the political landscape may not be flawless, as someone who grew up there and whose parents had to navigate treacherous puddles of blood on their way to school, I stand proudly by my people. This long-awaited change is well-deserved, considering the grief our country has been grappling with for decades. So, Elsbeth, I respect your comment. This moment is for the people of El Salvador.

El Salvador is also the location of the infamous prison where the U.S. is sending immigration detainees since the beginning of Trump's 2nd term, criminals or not. No thank you.
