You don’t expect a high alpine mountain town to feel like a proper beach vacation, but the trip I just took blew that assumption out of the water. Mountain towns usually sell you on flannel shirts, wood cabins, and hiding from the cold next to a fire. South Lake Tahoe completely flips the script.
My wife Liz and I just spent a few days out there in early October, and we barely needed our jackets.
Expedia recently named this spot the number one trending lake town in the United States in its new Unpack’27 report. So is the hype actually real or just a product of aggressive seasonal marketing?
I can confirm it‘s real.
Lake Tahoe is basically an ocean in the sky. It sits at 6,000 feet and holds water so clear you can see rocks fifty feet below the surface.

Top 5 Reasons To Visit South Lake Tahoe
If you’re on the fence about booking a flight and want some quick hits on why we loved it, here are my top 5 reasons I would go back.
- The Weather Anomaly: Locals have a running joke about the climate here. They get 300 days of pure sunshine, and the rest of the year it’s snowing. You can hike in a simple t-shirt during the shoulder season while staring at snow-capped peaks in the distance.
- The Water: The lake holds a deep shade of blue. Because it’s fed by snowmelt and sits at such a high elevation, the water clarity rivals the Caribbean.
- No Rental Car Required: The downtown is remarkably walkable, especially Heavenly Village. You can access major hiking trailheads, the lake shoreline, and the main ski gondola by walking straight out of your hotel lobby.
- The Split Personality: The state line cuts right through the center of town. You get quiet California nature on one side and towering Nevada casinos on the other.
- The Tropical Alpine Contrast: You can spend your entire day hiking through ancient granite boulders and then immediately shift into vacation mode with a cold island cocktail by fire pit at night at Margaritaville Resort Lake Tahoe.

The Sunshine Rule
We walked into the Explore Tahoe Visitor Center on our first morning to get some ideas of what we wanted to do and started talking to the guy on duty about the weather. It was seventy degrees and completely cloudless. He told us that locals have a running joke about the climate up here. They get 300 days of pure sunshine, and the rest of the year it’s snowing.
That weather pattern makes October a great time to visit if you aren’t coming solely for ski season. The summer lake crowds are completely gone. The winter ski traffic has not arrived yet. You just get crisp morning air that warms up by noon. The sun is incredibly intense at this altitude.
You can hike in a simple t-shirt while staring at snow-capped peaks in the distance. It feels like you cheated the system.

Tropical Vibes in the Alpine
We booked a room at the Margaritaville Resort Lake Tahoe. On paper, putting a tropical resort in the middle of a cold mountain range sounds absurd. In execution, it’s brilliant.
You spend your entire day outside in the thin alpine air or skiing if you are visiting over the winter. Then you walk through the hotel doors and instantly shift into vacation mode with a cold drink in your hand.
It gives you the best of both worlds. The property is located directly in the center of the action, and like I said, South Lake Tahoe is super walkable. Everything you actually want to do sits within a short walk of the hotel lobby.
You get the rugged outdoor adventure during the day and the completely relaxed island atmosphere at night.

No Car Required Hiking
We specifically wanted to get out into the trees without dealing with crowded trailhead parking lots. Van Sickle Bi-State Park sits right behind the downtown strip. You just walk a few blocks from the hotel and you’re already hitting the trails.
And the trails here are gorgeous. You hike up through giant granite boulders and ancient pine trees. Within twenty minutes, you are standing on an elevated ridge looking down at the entire lake. We spent the whole afternoon just wandering the paths and watching the sunlight shift across the water while we ate our packed lunch on a rock outcropping.
The next day we wanted to get closer to the shoreline. We walked the Lam Watah Nature Trail. It’s a flat and easy path that cuts through a wide open meadow and drops you directly onto the sand at Nevada Beach. Walking right up to the water edge with the mountains towering behind you is a surreal experience. You get the physical reward of a great hike without ever having to turn the ignition on a rental car.

Off-Season Gondola Rides and Casinos
South Lake Tahoe is famous for Heavenly Ski Resort. We definitely want to come back with our winter gear when the snow falls. But the mountain is still open for exploration in the off-season. You can walk out of Margaritaville and jump straight onto the Heavenly Gondola within 5 minutes.
It takes you thousands of feet up the mountain side, and you get a panoramic view of the Nevada and California state lines splitting the lake right down the middle. You step out onto the observation deck and all you hear is the wind ripping through the trees. It’s the best view in the entire region.
When you come back down to the base, the town offers a very weird but fun split personality. Because the state line cuts right through the streets, you have quiet California nature on one side and towering Nevada casinos on the other. If you like playing blackjack or hitting the sportsbook after a hike, you just walk across the street. It’s optional, but adds a fun late-night energy to the town.

Fueling Up at Basecamp and Landshark
Mountain air makes you incredibly hungry (or at least it does me 😅). We didn’t want fine dining with white tablecloths. We wanted heavy and satisfying food. Basecamp Pizza sits right in the Heavenly Village, and it’s exactly what you want after miles of hiking. When we are back home hiking through the Red River Gorge, Miguel’s Pizza is a mandatory stop after our hikes, so heading to Basecamp Pizza felt right at home.
We split a roasted vegetable pizza while listening to a guy play acoustic guitar on the patio. The place has a great communal energy. Everyone is sitting in their hiking boots and just enjoying the afternoon sun.
Later that night, we kept things simple. We just walked downstairs to the Landshark Bar and Grille inside our hotel. Sitting by an outdoor fire pit with a cold beer and a plate of tacos while looking out at the pine trees is a great way to end a day. You get the bright tropical flavors of the coast while sitting in a high alpine resort.

When you pack for this trip, ignore the standard weather apps. The temperature swings wildly between the sunny afternoons and the cold mountain nights. Pack a heavy hooded sweatshirt for the evenings and a good pair of polarized sunglasses for the intense glare coming off the lake.
The One Hour Reno Strategy
Skip the nightmare of driving up from San Francisco. People waste half of their vacation sitting in dead-stop traffic on Interstate 80. We flew directly into Reno. You can grab a rental car at the airport and drive one hour south through the Washoe Valley or take the South Tahoe Airporter shuttle bus.
It’s an easy and scenic drive. You wind up Spooner Summit and drop right into the lake basin. The first time you see the water through the pine trees, it actually stops your conversation. The sheer scale of the lake is hard to comprehend until you are driving alongside it. You get all the dramatic alpine scenery without the exhausting travel day.
We arrived feeling completely fresh and ready to drop our bags.
Don’t wait for the winter storms to book this trip. The autumn shoulder season is the actual draw here. You get the hiking trails entirely to yourself and completely dodge the inflated winter lodging rates.
People always assume they have to choose between a relaxing island vacation and a rugged mountain adventure. Tahoe proves you don’t.
