We’re all about ease of travel, and there’s nothing better than a direct flight heading exactly where you want to go (or, at the very least, to a major hub that can get you where you want to go!).

With that in mind, we’re thrilled to hear that Turkish Airlines has launched a new flight from Detroit directly to Istanbul that will begin operation in November. Tickets are currently available, so make sure to book now for the best deal.

Here’s What You Need To Know

The new route will operate three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and the first flight will depart on November 15.

Although Istanbul is a major hub, and many travelers may only have a short layover there before their final destination, Turkish Airlines encourages travelers to schedule longer stopover times in order to experience the city with a program called Stopover in Istanbul

Passengers with layovers at least 20 hours in length can stay for free in certain partner hotels so that they can see something of Istanbul before continuing on with their trip. And maybe you’ll fall in love and make a longer trip there in the future!

All About Turkish Airlines

In operation since 1933, Turkish Airlines has become one of the most well-known and reputable airlines flying internationally today.

The experience of a long-haul flight can vary greatly depending on the airline that you’re flying, and Turkish Airlines generally receives positive reviews.

The airline’s fleet contains both Airbus and Boeing planes, so the actual setup and offerings will depend on your route, but Turkish Airlines was awarded seven out of seven stars on AirlineRatings.com for their product, which includes the in-flight entertainment, the pitch of the seat, meals, beds, and blankets and pillows, as well as the personal experience of the editors.

Additionally, Turkish Airlines is frequently cited as having some of the best airline food in the business, and we know how hard that can be to come by!

What To Do When You Arrive In Istanbul

Istanbul is a bucket-list destination for many travelers, and it’s one that will likely exceed your expectations. There’s no shortage of things to do and see, with historic and cultural sites like the Hagia Sofia and The Blue Mosque topping many lists.

You could spend an entire day just in the Grand Bazaar, wandering among the 4,000-plus shops and stalls and admiring ceramics, gold and silver jewelry, rugs, spices, and, of course, nibbling on small squares of powdery, sugary Turkish delight.

The bustling Taksim Square, often considered the center of modern Istanbul, draws nearly every visitor with its variety of restaurants, bars, and theaters.

But for a slightly less well-known destination, hop in a taxi or a ferry to Ortaköy, a trendier area that, during the day, is filled with shops and stalls and different craft and clothing markets on different days of the week.

In the evening, you’ll find it is one of Istanbul’s most popular neighborhoods to experience the nightlife.

While many buildings in the city are architectural and historic wonders in their own right, Istanbul is also home to many famous museums, including the group of three Istanbul Archaeological Museums, the Topkapi Palace Museum, The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, and the Great Palace Mosaics Museum, among many others that will delight history and art lovers alike.

After Exploring Istanbul, Keep Going

Although it’s clear that Istanbul is well worth an extended visit, the city also serves as a major hub for international flights, and this new route from Detroit could get you to a variety of places, including other locations within Turkey, such as short flights to Antalya, Izmir, or the capital city of Ankara.

Of course, the majority of direct flights out of Istanbul fly to other places in Europe, though there are also numerous flights to locations further afield, such as Cairo, Abu Dhabi, and Seoul.

Is this new service a “direct” flight or is it a “nonstop” flight? I ask because a direct flight is not the same as a nonstop flight and I really would like anyone giving any sort of travel advice to learn the definitions of those two terms and not use “direct” so ambiguously. (And the same goes for “adjoining” rooms and “connecting” rooms in hotels. They are not the same thing!)
