Peru Reopening for International Flights on October 5

Peru officially reopened borders for international flights on October 5, 2020, following the formal announcement made by President Martín Vizcarra on Friday, September 25, 2020.

“International flights will be authorized, as of October 5, between countries in the region and little by little to other latitudes,”

Phase 4 of Peru’s economic reactivation plan started allowing: “The transport of passengers by rail, maritime and air transport is being authorized from Oct. 5, according to the specific regulations that will give the Ministry of Transport with the Ministry of Health,” said Vizcarra.

Peru has been one of the most locked-down nations on the planet with ultra-strict curfews, movement restrictions and shut borders for the past 7 months.

Now after being virtually closed off from the rest of the world since March, Peru will start to relax restrictions and will now be permitting international flights to and from the country.

Who can enter Peru on October 5th?

Carlos Estremadoyro, the Minister of Transportation said on September 2nd that some of the first countries Peru will be allowing flights from include: Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Spain and the USA.

As of October 5th, flights are authorized from:

  • Asuncion (ASU)
  • Bogota (BOG)
  • Cali (CLO)
  • Guayaquil (GYE)
  • La Paz (LPB)
  • Medellin (MDE)
  • Montevideo (MVE)
  • Panama (PTY)
  • Quito (UIO)
  • Santa Cruz (VVI)
  • Santiago (SCL)

As of November 1st, flights will also be authorized from:

  • Atlanta (ATL)
  • Brasilia (BSB)
  • Buenos Aires (EZE)
  • Cancun (CUN)
  • Cartagena (CTG)
  • Cordoba (COR)
  • Houston (IAH)
  • Iguazu (IGR)
  • La Habana (HAV)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Mendoza (MDZ)
  • Mexico City (MEX)
  • Miami (MIA)
  • Montego Bay (MBJ)
  • New York City (EWR and JFK)
  • Orlando (MCO)
  • Porto Alegre (POA)
  • Punta Cana (PUJ)
  • Rio de Janerio (GIG)

Important Updates 2021

Flights over 8 hours are banned from entering Peru.

Starting January 4, 2021, Peru will require ALL arrivals to complete a 14-day quarantine. This is in combination with the 72-hour PCR test that is also required for entry. ** On March 15, 2021, they once again removed the 14-day quarantine

PCR Testing Required

One of the new biosecurity protocols that were announced with Peru’s reopening date, was the confirmation that all arrivals will be required to bring a proof of a negative PCR test, performed no longer than 72 hours before arrival.

As of 2021 – Antigen tests and proof of recovery are also accepted. The medical discharge certificate must be at least 14 days old and not older than 6 months. 

 

Online Health Form

Proof of the negative test and an online health declaration must be completed before entering Peru. 

Other biosecurity protocols upon arriving in Peru include: Thermal temperature scans, the wearing of masks on the plane and in the terminal, social distancing, and frequent hand sanitizing.

Machu Picchu will reopen on November 1, after being closed for over 7 months, albeit at 30% capacity.

Group sizes will be limited and socially distanced, but prices for tours are expected to drop.

Update: As of December, it has reclosed due to protests in the area.

Phase 4 of Peru's Reopening

Other permitted activities that will also be included with Peru’s Phase 4 of reopening will be:

  • Reopening of travel agencies and tour operators
  • Museums, galleries, cultural centers at 60% capacity
  • Restaurants and cafes at 50% capacity
  • Stores, boutiques and shopping centers at 60% capacity
  • Outdoor fitness clubs at 50% capacity
  • Zoos, theme parks and botanical gardens at 60% capacity
  • Sport Fishing and nautical sports at 50% capacity

Peru has been in mainstream press during the pandemic for having one of the world’s toughest and strictest lockdowns, but despite the immense efforts, also one of the highest death rates.

The restrictions have varied enormously over the past 7 months, and differ by region, but most of Peru saw controls like – prohibitions on driving, people allowed to leave their homes on designated days divided by gender, curfews as early as 8:00pm at night, children under 14 only permitted 30 minutes of outdoor time under the supervision of an adult, and all-day Sunday quarantines with no movement possible.

Even if entry into Peru for the purpose of tourism is indeed confirmed for October 5th, all travelers should consider the possibility of a second lockdown, seeing as how quick to close borders Peru has been in the past.

It has been extremely helpful reading your replies. One more question, foreigners stuck in Peru can also buy these operating flights With tourism purpose to fly from Lima to one of these countries Reopen to Tourism without any problems?

Or these resuming international flights are only permitted to peru national people to buy?

We don't know for sure yet, as they have not been entirely clear, but this is how I understand it so far: The flights that will be available on October 5th should be fine to book for external travel from either Peru nationals or foreigners, as they are not classified as humanitarian flights. As long as the country you are flying to allows residents/flights from Peru to enter, you should be fine.

I am trying to find a government document or decree that explains if in-bound tourists are also allowed into Peru as of October 5th, and if so, what countries are permitted to fly IN, as that is still not clear either.

Hopefully in a few days I will have more clear information

Thanks for your helpful info. It’s good to know that I will not need a PCR test for departure as Mexico, my destination country does not require it.

I have some doubts about airlines running flights from Lima to Mexico.

Do you know if AEROMEXICO runs also officially direct flights between Lima and Mexico so that I can buy ticket from them without no problem?

The flights with LATAM to Mexico from Lima NOW have to transfer in a third country either Brazil or Chile Instead of flying to Mexico City directly which were the cases 1 month ago when I checked their tickets. It seems a wired to me. Any thoughts about this?

Hi! I don't really have an easy way to answer these flight questions for you, but I always use 'Google Flights' to research airlines and flight paths, so I suggest you try that took and see if it helps to answer your question

Hello, If i travel to Peru through one of the 5 counties but I'm not a citizen of one of them. Can I enter Peru? In my case: Dutch citizen, flying from Mexico to Peru. Thank you!
