Cozumel mayor Pedro Joaquín Delbouis has announced in a press release that Royal Caribbean will return to the island of Cozumel in June. The sailings will resume June 12 from Nassau and will visit Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Grand Bahama Island and Cozumel, Mexico.
The seven day voyages will go on sale on March 24th on the Royal Caribbean website and only be open to vaccinated adult travelers. Passengers under the age of 18 must present proof of a negative Covid-19 test. Royal Caribbean has announced the crew will also be fully vaccinated.
“There have been months of a lot of work. We have spent more than ten months in continuous meetings with Royal Caribbean and their international executives to guarantee a safe return of cruises to Cozumel, both for the travelers and the ship’s crew, as well as for our tourist servers,” said Joaquín Delbouis, reported the Riviera Maya Times.
The Mayor of Cozumel thanked the Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González for his hard work to bring cruises back to the island.
Royal Caribbean officially announced the sailings in a statement from Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International.
“We are excited to return to Cozumel when Royal Caribbean resumes service in the Caribbean region.”
“We have had a long and successful relationship with Mexico and we are grateful for the collaboration and support of Mayor Pedro Joaquín and the government. Our destination communities have been greatly affected by the pandemic and we are committed to working together with local partners to drive more employment opportunities and reignite economic growth in the region,” said Bayley.
Vaccines Have Allowed For Cruising To Resume
Royal Caribbean decided to launch sailings from the Bahamas after strict restart regulations by the CDC have delayed operations in the United States. The CDC lifted the No Sail Order at the end of October and replaced it with a Conditional Sailing Order. The CDC outlined a series of requirements that cruise lines would have to follow to restart operations. Cruise lines are still waiting for the full details and instructions from the CDC.
With the progress of mass vaccination rollouts across the United States, Royal Caribbean stated it was the key to relaunching operations, even if it had to be outside of U.S. waters.
“The vaccines are clearly a game-changer for all of us, and with the number of vaccinations and their impact growing rapidly, we believe starting with cruises for vaccinated adult guests and crew is the right choice,” Bayley stated in a press release from the company.
On June 12, Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas will set sail from Nassau and make its way to Cozumel. The ship accommodates a maximum of 3,807 guests when all berths are filled. Royal Caribbean has not released the full health protocols at this time or if the ship will be filled to capacity.
