So, you’ve decided on your holiday destination but still have so much to plan. What is the best way to get there? Where should you stay? How will you meet new people if you don’t know the language? Finding the answers to these questions can be tricky, and you might need some guidance. Before you go, make sure to download these free apps to help you make the most of your vacation.
For Trip Planning
The first step of your journey is to plan what transportation you will take. Let Omio (formerly GoEuro) help you to find the fastest and most affordable way to travel. Just enter your departure and arrival locations, and the app will find the best flights, trains, and buses to suit your needs. Once you’ve booked your transportation, forward your confirmation emails to Tripit to store all of your travel details in one safe place. The app creates a master itinerary and sends you helpful reminders to keep you on schedule. You’ll never miss a flight again!
For Accommodation
Once your transportation is sorted, you’ll be ready to check out all of the accommodation options that are waiting for you. If you’re traveling on a budget, try Hostelworld to find accommodating hostels in the area. The app allows you to filter your search by rating, location, or price so that you can find the right one for you. For a traditional hotel stay, you can’t beat the prices at Booking. Although the site is super popular, few people know that they also have a handy, portable smartphone app.
For Transportation
Once you’ve arrived at your destination, you will probably want to get out and see the city. If you want to save a little money on the inevitably expensive cab or Uber, try traveling like one of the locals. Use Moovit to navigate your way through the complicated subway system, bus routes, and train lines with ease. Or, if you have decided that the grass really is greener in the next town, catch a Flixbus for bus fares as low as €5. In Germany, you can try out the new Flixtrain too!
For Finding Food
When it’s finally dinner time, the options can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to go. The Fork shows a map of available restaurants in your location with user reviews & ratings. Using their loyalty program, you can get up to 50% off at tons of restaurants and make instant reservations. If you would rather try a traditional home-cooked meal, find the experience you’re looking for on EatWith. Local hosts offer to cook everything from Turkish Coffee + Fortune Telling to A Garden Party Under The Stars, and more!
For The Best Tours
If you want to see the city and learn some local history but don’t want to blow your budget on an expensive sightseeing tour, Sandeman’s New Europe is the best app for you. The app offers free tip-based tours of most major cities in Europe. Or, if you would rather skip the tourist crowds: why not book a private, personal tour with a local guide on WithLocals? They offer a range of tours including cycling, nightlife, family-friendly, and food tasting tours. These tours are 100% customizable, you even have your choice of tour guides!
For Meeting People
If you’re traveling alone and want to meet fellow travelers and make local friends, check out Meetup. You can search through tons of social events going on in your city, and join groups to meet like-minded people. Similarly, you can find unique experiences through Airbnb Experiences hosted by local people. There is definitely something for everyone including cooking classes, hiking & sailing trips, and various animal adventures – like swimming with dolphins.
For Upgrading Your Airport Experience
Lastly, take the stress out of your flight home by using FLIO to receive real-time alerts about your flight status. If you happen to get stuck with a long layover, the app provides airport guides to help you find your gate, available food options, and the best shops. They also feature a 24/7 call center to help you find lost luggage. If you can’t bear the thought of that long layover and prefer to travel in style, try LoungeBuddy. The app finds airport lounges near your location and shows you which ones are available. For as little as $25, you can purchase instant daily passes to their featured airports allowing you to rest and relax.
