3) Bandung, Indonesia: Where Colonial Meets Millennial 🇮🇩

City view of Bandung, Indoneisa

Bandung is an old city, founded in the early 1800s. Today, you'll still discover Dutch influence with its colonial facades and old-world street layouts, sprinkled with Asian delights, of course.

Bali is Indonesia's crown jewel, even after many travelers have expressed a myriad of disappointments in recent years.

As such, more travelers are opting to explore within Indonesia's diverse archipelago Bandung, located inland in West Java.

This almost unheard-of city until this point has layers of heritage waiting to be explored, and conversely, a hip, youthful city life shaped by universities, indie brands, and live music.

Therefore, Bandung isn't just a walking history lesson with museums and old-timey streets, it's a trendy ‘college town' and as we say back in the States.

You'll also find astounding nature. The cityscape is backdropped by the Parahyangan Highlands and surrounding volcanic terrain, inviting adventurers to explore beyond the urban sprawl.

Bandung won't break the bank either. Even a last-minute trip can get you a 4-star hotel for $30 in February, but it's still the rainy season…

The best times to visit without getting soaked are June through September.

🇮🇩

Forget Bali. Try Bandung.

This “unheard-of” city mixes Dutch colonial history with a hip indie scene. Oh, and 4-star hotels are $30.

2) Okinawa: The ‘Hawaii Of Japan' 🇯🇵

We get it — Tokyo is awesome. But Japan's lesser-known beaches are truly pristine.

Unspoiled coastline of Okinawa

You may have heard of Okinawa due to World War II history, and the fact that many U.S. service members are based here, so it's likely you won't stand out like a sore thumb venturing off to this phenomenal island.

But seeing familiar faces and camo gear aren't the reasons Okinawa has been dubbed Japan's ‘Hawaii'.

It's been given that moniker due to subtropical climate, turquoise waters, laid-back lifestyle, and for the simple fact that it's an off-path island similar to what Hawaii is to the U.S. mainland.

But don't expect to find a luau…

Instead, you'll discover a distinct Ryukyu culture, local island cuisine, and traditions found nowhere else in Japan, which is hard to believe since Tokyo seems to have everything under the sun.

One such tradition is Eisa dancing, led by drum-led performances during Obon to honor their ancestors.

That said, we all know Japan is a place to feast, but you'll never guess the place famed traveler and chef Anthony Bourdain just had to have on his Okinawa visit — an egg salad sandwich from a Lawson convenience store.

I'll take sushi…

The bottom line is that more travelers are realizing that if you can make it to Tokyo, you can make it to Okinawa, just a 2.5 to 3-hour flight away.

Plus, who wouldn't want to have a stopover in Tokyo?
