What are the hottest travel trends of the summer?
These are the top travel trends right now according to Pinterest!
The platform just released its Pinterest Summer 2024 Travel Report which reveals what users are searching for the most when it comes to travel.
According to Pinterest, the platform receives more than one billion travel-related searches annually, and a whopping 8 in 10 users consult Pinterest when planning travel.
These are some of the top trending searches on the platform right now:
Hiking & Trekking
Hiking, trekking, mountaineering, and camping have all experienced a massive increase in searches on Pinterest. Basically, all things outdoorsy and involving nature are trending for summer.
And searches for “national parks” are up a whopping 250% on Pinterest.
Visitors are flocking to the most visited national park in the U.S. in record numbers, but these are some great underrated national parks to visit in the U.S. if you want to get off the beaten path.
Outside the U.S., searches for “Machu Picchu” are up 190%, indicating that travelers are interested in this iconic South American trekking destination.
Solo Travel
Solo travel has been increasing in popularity majorly in the last few years, and searches for “solo travel” on Pinterest have shot up by 35% recently.
As a solo female traveler who has visited more than 55 countries around the globe, I'm obviously a huge fan of this trend — I even shared my top solo travel tips I've learned over the years.
More and more travelers are realizing that they don't need to make compromises or wait for the perfect time to travel with friends, family, or significant others. It's better to just seize the opportunity and go!
If you've never been on a solo trip before, these are the top five countries I recommend for first-time solo travelers.
Train Journeys
Another travel trend on Pinterest? Train travel!
Searches for “train journeys” are up 90% right now, which indicates that traveling by train is going to be a popular method of transportation this summer.
There's something so romantic and nostalgic about traveling by train.
In Europe, travelers can book train travel in 33 countries for as little as $315 this summer with a Eurail pass. And while train travel isn't as popular or developed in North America, there are still some amazing, scenic train journeys you can take like the Rocky Mountaineer.
Train travel is becoming more popular in unexpected destinations like Mexico, too, with the launch of the Maya Train from Cancun.
Wellness Travel
Another huge travel trend for this summer is wellness travel, with Pinterest recording a 90% increase in searches for “wellness retreats.”
Travelers are seeking wellness trips to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Wellness travel is a great way to unplug and unwind, returning from your vacation feeling refreshed rather than exhausted.
There are tons of great wellness destinations in the U.S. like Sedona, Arizona, the Berkshires in Massachusetts, and Kauai, Hawaii.
Or you can head to Los Cabos, the number one wellness destination in Mexico.
Road Trips
Finally, road trips are trending on Pinterest with various road trip-related searches up as much as 250%.
It's no surprise since road trips are a quintessential summer vacation. There's nothing like the feeling of driving down a winding road on a sunny day with the windows rolled down blasting your favorite music and watching the scenery go by.
The best destination in the U.S. for a road trip this summer is this stunning parkway along the East Coast. Or head to one of these states ranked best for a summer road trip.
