Where do solo travelers go when they travel alone?

This question has been answered with a recent report by U.S. News on the best destinations for solo travel.

While these top places aren’t the only places solo travelers visit, they tend to be the most popular.

These countries were ranked based on seven attributes: friendly, culturally accessible, pleasant,  fun, climate, safe, scenic, and unapproachable. While these factors help create a better understanding of a country, these factors can change. Thus, it’s always important to be aware and stay updated with travel news by checking sites such as travel.state.gov.

Nonetheless, if you’re planning your next solo or first solo trip, here are some places you may consider going.

10. Brazil

Brazilians are known to be some of the friendliest in the world. Perhaps because the country has around 300 sunny days a year, it’s hard to be in a bad mood with so much sun.

In addition to the people, visitors love visiting Brazil to relax on their stunning beaches and eat local delicacies such as Açaí, super-food fruit, or Brigadeiros, a Brazilian version of chocolate truffle.

Although crimes such as theft and drug trafficking are prevalent in the country, it doesn’t take away from Brazil’s vibrant culture. With one of the biggest celebrations in the world, Carnival, and 72 national parks, Brazil is a paradise for solo travelers.

9. Switzerland

Because of the country’s low crime and excellent infrastructure, many solo travelers can peacefully explore the country.

It is important to note that Switzerland can be pretty expensive, especially if traveling alone. Keep your eyes open for local markets where food prices are cheaper.

Besides the high costs, there’s much to explore, such as visiting the Geneva Water Fountain, the Swiss Museum, and the Chillon Castle.

8. Ireland

Known for being the birthplace of one of the world’s most popular beers, Guinness, Ireland has become an increasingly attractive destination for solo travelers.

Nicknamed Emerald Island for its lavish greenery, it’s a great place for solo adventures for many reasons. One, it’s easy to get around with their public transportation system.

A second reason is that the pub culture is alive and well. Making friends by grabbing a drink at the local bar is simple.

7. Thailand

The country that is a growing hotspot makes the list one of the top countries for solo travelers. One of the main reasons why many people opt out of group trips and travel solo is Thailand’s affordability.

Major cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai have a wide range of accommodations, from comfortable to luxurious, at prices that won’t leave you scraping for pennies.

6. Australia

The land of Kangaroos and Koalas is a beautiful place for solo travelers. The continent is filled with friendly locals and many things to explore. If you love water adventures, there are endless options, from surfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef.

If you’re more of a land person, Australia has a rich history that you can learn through tours about Aboriginal culture.

5. Portugal

Portugal is a top spot for independent travelers because of its beautiful sunny coastline and mildly cold winters. On average, Portugal receives 28 million visitors a year.

If you wander the streets of well-known cities such as Lisbon and Porto, you will marvel at the beautiful architecture.

Many solo travelers often visit the region of Algarve to experience beautiful beaches. There are also smaller cities like Lagos to experience different cultures and more petite city charm.

4. New Zealand

With accessibility and a relatively safe environment, New Zealand is great for those traveling alone.

However, an interesting fact about traveling alone, especially for those who like solo hiking, is that New Zealand has many non-threatening animals. For instance, there are no crocodiles or poisonous land snakes. There are some spiders to be weary of, but for the most part, you can frolic in nature worry-free.

3. Italy

Does the pasta or pizza make Italy the third most popular place for solo travelers? It’s probably both.

Besides the world-renowned food, there are many reasons why Italy is high on the bucket list for solo travelers.

Bologna Italy

If you’re visiting Italy alone, you can quickly fill your day by visiting significant sites such as The Colosseum in Rome. Perhaps you set up your tripod to take an “iconic” photo of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. However, Italy offers much more than monuments that have withstood the test of time.

Solo travelers can easily participate in the culture by attending the opera or cooking classes to learn the secrets to the world’s best pasta.

2. Greece

It’s almost impossible to stroll through a travel influencer’s Instagram feed and not see photos from Greece, with places like Mykonos that give tourists stunning beaches and beautiful views. Then there’s Athens, which provides art, history and culture. Greece can entertain any solo traveler.

The major cities offer exciting nightlife if you want to be around crowds. However, if you want some peace away from the city businesses, many smaller islands off the coast of Greece offer a bit of solitude.

1. Spain

Taking the lead for the best country to travel alone is the one and only Spain—a solo traveler’s dream.

Train and bus systems can take you all over the country. Solo travelers are safe in the major cities while being vigilant of their belongings.

The best for destination for solo traveller is obviously City of Solo in Central Java, Indonesia. And for a turn could also go to Solothurn, Switzerland 😆 (Joke aside, both destinations are good to visit!)
