There’s no better time to think about international travel.
Thanksgiving is one of the biggest travel weeks in the American calendar, with the vast majority booking domestic travel to spend the holidays with family and friends.
This means international flights tend to be more affordable and easier to secure. But where are international travelers choosing to go?
A new report by Allianz Partners has surveyed more than 800,000 travel itineraries to find the travel destinations that Americans are visiting most between November 18 and November 28.
Based on this report, these are the top 5 international destinations for Americans right now:
5. Montego Bay, Jamaica
Montego Bay is considered the perfect destination for a Jamaican beach getaway.
If you’ve only got a couple of days off then Montego Bay is a great choice thanks to its proximity to the airport, its crystal clear beaches which are equally easy to access, and its endless high-end resorts too.
The weather is great, the nightlife is exuberant, and there is a huge array of activities available for adventurous types too.
Montego Bay is considered the jewel in Jamaica’s crown and is a great place for a vibrant but relaxing Thanksgiving celebration.
4. London, United Kingdom
The highest-ranking European destination on this list is London, which has been an incredibly popular spot for American travelers this year.
London is a world-class city that tops ‘must visit’ and ‘best destination’ lists year after year. It offers the best of history and culture while also being a modern and multicultural place to visit.
Thanksgiving is a great time to visit London due to crisp weather and low crowd levels.
It’s the perfect sweet spot after the hot and sweaty tourist crowds of the summer months and before the Christmas shoppers descend on the famous shopping areas of Oxford Street and Regents Street.
Head to Buckingham Palace for the perfect photo opportunity, take tea at the Ritz, shop like a faux millionaire in Harrods, or simply relax amongst the crisp leaves in Hyde Park.
3. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Mexican beach vacations are a hot pick for holiday travel this year, securing the top 3 spots on this list.
Puerto Vallarta is second only to Cancun in terms of visitor numbers and boasts beautiful beaches, a convenient location, and a highly regarded wellness industry.
If you’re hoping to relax and unwind, then there are few better destinations.
Puerto Vallarta has a picturesque Old Town where visitors can explore authentic Mexican architectural heritage and tradition. But you’ll also find a modern boardwalk and active beach scene here: it’s a destination that offers the best of both worlds!
2. San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico
In the 2nd spot is San Jose Del Cabo. This is another popular beach destination that has been breaking all-time tourism records in 2023.
Laid-back colonial gem San Jose Del Cabo is a picture-postcard-perfect resort destination with a world-class marina and gold sand beaches.
This is an ideal location if you’re looking to explore Mexico’s sleepy, traditional side rather than the raucous party atmosphere that you will find in a destination like Cancun.
You’ll find warm hospitality, natural beauty, and incredible beaches here too. Why not try Playita Beach, which has a roped-off swimming area and regular beach for swimming, skim-boarding, surfing, and other water sports too?
Cancun is the number one international destination for American travelers right now. It has held this number-one spot every year since 2020.
This should come as no surprise because Cancun is the indisputable number-one destination in the Mexican Caribbean.
Cancun is one of the most popular winter escapes for American travelers, and it’s easy to see why: regular flight connections, beautiful beaches, and a vibrant nightlife make Cancun an easy destination to explore.
Cancun is home to luxurious resorts, a stunning coastline, and visitor-friendly facilities. And now it will have more American visitors than any other destination this Thanksgiving.
