When you think of a classic European escape, your mind probably goes straight to photogenic hilltops, winding cobblestone alleys, and historic architecture untouched by modern skyscrapers. That’s where mine goes anyway… It’s the go-to continent for experiencing old-world charm.
Europe packs a huge number of stunning destinations into a small area, and I’ve always been jealous of Europeans for their proximity.
Narrowing it down to the absolute best spots requires looking past the heavy tourist traps to find the places that deliver on the hype. Luckily for us, Travel + Leisure seems to have the answer.
If you’re planning a trip across the pond, here are the top 7 most beautiful cities in Europe.
Paris, France

Paris holds its spot on the Travel + Leisure beauty list year after year for a reason. The city blends iconic historic monuments with well-preserved neighborhoods like Le Marais, where you find elegant mansions turned into museums and vintage boutiques. It’s the creative and culinary heart of France, letting you balance grand architecture with quiet moments sitting in local neighborhood cafes.
The golden hour light hitting the city from Montmartre is unmatched. If you are visiting in late 2026, keep in mind that the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is rolling out.
Make sure you have your logistics sorted early, and pre-book timed-entry tickets for major spots like the Louvre. It’s non-negotiable now.
Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a coastal powerhouse where gothic history collides with the surreal, modernist visions of Antoni Gaudí. The city feels vibrant and artistic.
You walk past centuries-old facades in the Gothic Quarter and then stare up at bright, organic shapes scattered across the Eixample district.
The Sagrada Família remains the undisputed visual anchor of the city. As of early 2026, the central Tower of Jesus Christ officially topped out, making it the tallest church in the world. Now that the central towers are finished, the skyline view of the basilica is spectacular. Book a rooftop terrace in the Eixample district at sunset to get the best wide-angle photo without fighting the ground-level crowds.
Palermo, Italy

While Florence and Venice offer polished beauty, T+L pushed Palermo onto the list for its raw, layered aesthetic. It isn’t trying to be pretty for you; it’ss busy being itself. Palermo is loud, layered, and alive. You get a gritty charm mixed with a live music scene that most visitors never expect.
The Palermo Cathedral is a staggering visual timeline of the city, showing Norman, Gothic, Baroque, and Islamic architectural influences all layered onto a single building. Don’t skip the historic markets after dark. The city centers its fantastic nightlife and live music around these areas. It feels like a real night out rather than a curated tourist experience.
Rome, Italy

Rome is an open-air museum packed full of ancient wonders. On my last visit, we were walking to grab lunch and stumbled upon some new ruins being uncovered right in the middle of the city.
It. Is. Everywhere.
It’s hard to find another capital where you can drink your morning espresso staring at a two-thousand-year-old temple. The Eternal City is all about scale and history. You navigate narrow cobble-paved alleys that suddenly open up to reveal ornate fountains and towering ruins.
Right now is an amazing time to see the city’s beauty. The 2025 Jubilee forced the completion of hundreds of infrastructure projects. The scaffolding is gone, facades are clean, and new pedestrian zones near Castel Sant’Angelo are open. With the Jubilee crowds gone, you can enjoy the newly resurfaced piazzas without being shoulder-to-shoulder with millions of pilgrims.
London, England

London manages to merge deep-rooted royal history with a cutting-edge modern skyline better than almost anyone else, keeping it high on the magazine’s rankings. You get a sprawling metropolis built around the River Thames. Neighborhoods shift drastically in look, from the historic charm of South Kensington to the gleaming skyscrapers in the City of London.
The lush green spaces cutting through the urban grid are beautiful. Kew Gardens alone holds a world-class botanical collection with over 50,000 living plants inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are traveling here, remember that the UK now requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for many visitors.
Get this sorted well before your departure date so you don’t get turned away at the gate.
Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is one of those places that looks better in person than it does in photographs.
The contrast of the orange terracotta roofs against the bright blue Adriatic Sea is staggering. The city feels like an impenetrable medieval fortress. It was built for defense, but today those thick stone walls serve as the ultimate coastal viewing platform.
Walking the Old Town walls gives you amazing views of the ocean and the historic streets below. When I was here last October, the highlight of the trip wasn’t just the city walls. Book a boat tour out to the oyster farm platforms in Mali Ston Bay. You get out on the water, beat the crowds, and eat fresh seafood right at the source. (You can read about it here if you are interested).
Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh brings a dramatic and unique type of beauty to the table. It’s built on an extinct volcano and dominated by a sprawling ancient castle.
The city is a sharp split between the ancient, winding closes of the Old Town and the elegant, symmetrical streets of the New Town.
The skyline is defined by Edinburgh Castle, an ancient fortress that has seen a fair share of history. Skip the standard bus tours and hike up Arthur’s Seat. It’s a decent climb up an extinct volcanic peak near Holyrood Palace, but the 360-degree views sweeping across the city are the best you will find.
