Huatulco is a town in the state of Oaxaca, located in the Sierra Madre del Sur. A tropical dreamscape with a jungle and abundant vegetation, it is home to nine major bays. This Mexican haven has so many things to explore.
Huatulco National Park
Hidden along the beautiful coast of Oaxaca, this bay was developed with an eye toward ecological preservation. It is a destination known for its marine life and many animal species found throughout town. It has one of the richest ecosystems in Mexico. It is composed of 36 beaches where every corner is magical and full of environmental beauty. You can find rivers, waterfalls, mountain trails, and magical bays. Huatulco National Park has been declared a Natural Protected Area because it is home to more than 413 species of plants, 130 mammals, 291 birds, 72 reptiles, and 15 amphibians. If you want to explore further, take a boat to Riscalillo or San Agustin where you will find a deep connection with the relaxing environment.
Culture and Gastronomy
During your stay, you can do educational, recreational, and cultural activities under the principles of preservation and sustainability. Being a part of Oaxaca, this State's ancient history and culture are reflected in Huatulco in its crafts, folklore, festivities, and celebrations, especially in the mouthwatering Oaxacan and coastal gastronomy. There is so much to learn about this city founded in 1539, and its cultural heritage. You can purchase traditional products such as quesillo, chocolate, and mezcal. There are also exotic grasshoppers, tasajo, cecina enchilada, and its world-renowned mole dish. With so many beaches, it's no surprise that seafood cuisine is also a tradition in local restaurants that offer the catch of the day. Order delicious appetizers or dishes that include lobster, shrimp, crab, or one of the many fish varieties.
Coffee Plantations
If you're a coffee connoisseur or fan, visit the different organic coffee producers in Huatulco. Take a guided tour through their coffee farms and processing plants. Get to know the small details and aspects that make this area's product unique. You can stay at the plantations, spend the night, and during the day enjoy their outstanding Oaxaca cuisine, as well as the exquisite freshly roasted and ground coffee. Finca Margaritas offers a unique glamping experience, where you can learn about the cycle of coffee and the process from the plant to your cup. Other amenities include Temazcal, which is a low-heat sweat lodge that originated in pre-Hispanic times.
Tour of the Bays
Conquer the waters of Huatulco with a tour of the bays. You can do a boat tour or explore on your own on a Jet Ski. This tour promises adventure and plenty of adrenaline rush. For three hours, you will visit beautiful, deserted beaches, snorkel, and swim on a tranquil beach. After this incredible adventure, you can enjoy a meal on the beach and relax in front of the sea. This is one of the best ways to explore the different bays and a fun way to get around. If you choose a boat tour, each one does something different, but most of them leave from Bahia Santa Cruz, and they take you to San Agustin Bay, where you can do some snorkeling. Other activities include kayaking and surfing. This is a great way to spend the day, especially for sea and adventure lovers.
Magical Waterfalls
An hour and a half from Huatulco, among the green vitality of the coastal landscape, you will find the Magical Waterfalls of Copalitilla. These waterfalls are a magical experience indeed, fed by the crystal-clear waters of the Copalita River, where you can enjoy a natural massage below their refreshing and relaxing streams. Surrounded by trees, flowers, and other vegetation, the tour follows a foot trail along the river, which brings you past several large cascades. Swinging ropes, caves with water, and natural pools are a few of the amazing spots you will find during this adventure.
If you like ecotourism, Huatulco should be on top of your next place to visit in Mexico. This sustainable and ecological town has received the EarthCheck Platinum Destination certification, and it will blow you away with all it has to offer.
