Popular Canadian airline, WestJet, has announced 20 new routes, including a trio of new U.S. destinations. Beginning in the Summer of 2023, travelers will have more frequent options to fly across Canada or connect across the border with the neighboring U.S.
WestJet’s major hub is based in Calgary. From there, passengers will now have the option to fly direct to Washington D.C. and Detroit as the carrier begins to focus on its promised expansion.
Focus on U.S. Expansion
Recently, the airline unveiled its plans for growth well into the future. With the announcement of these new routes, WestJet fans should be excited for what’s to come.
WestJet CEO stated, “We are thrilled to be expanding our network and giving our guests substantial opportunity to explore the U.S., and Canada from coast-to-coast this summer”.
Delta and WestJet have been partners for quite some time, so the new additions will help flyers connect with other hubs, such as Minneapolis and Detroit.
Passengers will now have easier access to over 150 destinations through this new plan with its continued relations with Delta. The best news of all is loyal customers will get benefits from both airlines! Cardholders shouldn’t be shy about using their points since flights this summer have been seen as low as $280 round trip but also as high as $600 or more!
Altogether, the U.S. has become much easier to visit this summer. Those interested in booking should go to WestJet's official website.

Minneapolis was the big winner of WestJet’s announcement claiming direct flights with the cities of Edmonton and Saskatoon.
“We're thrilled to welcome WestJet to Minnesota and are pleased to add two important business routes to Edmonton and Saskatoon from MSP. WestJet's arrival also opens up new connections for travelers across Western Canada and the United States leveraging their codeshare with Delta Air Lines, MSP's largest carrier.” Brian Ryks, the CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission and the Minneapolis airport.
New Service: Detroit – Calgary
As it stands today, Delta only has two nonstop routes to Canada through Montreal and Toronto. That will all change this summer when Detroit becomes a hotspot for WestJet and its partner airline.
Beginning May 26, travelers will be able to fly direct to Calgary. This route is expected to operate 5 times per week through the end of October.
“With the addition of WestJet, our customers will be able to fly directly from Detroit to Calgary for the first time since 2005. We're hoping this route will also give our Canadian neighbors one more reason to visit our great region,” Detroit Airport's CEO Chad Newton said.
Being on the border with Canada, Detroit is no stranger to Canadian travel. Instead of crossing into Windsor across the Detroit River, WestJet is making the journey much easier!
New Service: Washington DC – Calgary
There will soon be direct routes between beautiful Calgary and the nation’s capital. Beginning June 2, passengers can fly round trip between these pair of cities up to 3 times per week.
There are 2 options for flyers out of Washington DC (plus nearby Baltimore) until the beginning of October. This route will strictly be limited to Dulles International Airport (IAD).
New Routes From Calgary:
Being the hub of WestJet, it's only natural for Calgary to have an increase in flight options. The airline is not only offering new routes to cities such as Detroit but also breathing life back into former routes such as Quebec City and Austin.
- Terrace 4 times weekly from May 1
- Austin twice weekly from May 18

- Detroit 5 times weekly from May 26

New Routes Within Canada:
Besides a further expansion into the U.S., WestJet has high hopes of focusing on Western Canada to give competitors a run for their money. Mainly big brother Air Canada and new budget airlines Lynx and Flair.
WestJet recently released a statement saying “Today’s announcement underpins WestJet’s strategic ambitions to grow its presence across Western Canada and further strengthens Canada’s east-to-west connectivity”.
