Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), in New Jersey, has always been among the top three airports for travelers visiting or traveling from New York City. And now, this airport has gone through major changes and exciting renovations that travelers will get to experience soon.
According to the information shared in the New York Times, the new Terminal A will open for passengers on December 8 and will amaze travelers with its brand-new facilities.
On Tuesday, authorities and New Jersey’s Governor, Phil D. Murphy, celebrated the opening of the new terminal. Terminal A first opened in 1973, and the new $2.7 billion investment is its first big transformation. “We are here to bury the old Terminal A, not to praise it,” said Gov. Murphy.
The new terminal is twice as big as the previous structure and has impressive and signature works of art throughout the whole construction. It has 33 gates, modern facilities, local businesses, and comfortable seating areas. Its design features local culture.
“Newark Airport’s new Terminal A is a world-class 21st-century marvel, with cutting-edge check-in, security, and touchless e-gate technology. Public art, iconic concessions, and highly original digital displays also create an unmistakable New Jersey sense of place,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton.
What Travelers Can Expect At Newark
New York is getting new modern, and impressive terminals! LaGuardia airport recently had a huge transformation and opened new terminals B and the new Delta Air Lines Terminal C, and the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) just started a huge rebuild that will finish its first phase in 2026.

Newark International Airport will offer travelers more than just a new terminal. Considering that United Airlines suspended services at JFK and opened a new large and luxurious lounge at terminal C this year, this airport is finally making significant improvements to transition from its decayed reputation.
The developers have a large vision for this airport and expect to expand and transform more areas of the airport in the near future. For now, these are the main features travelers will find at the new Terminal A:
- 33 gates: 21 will open next month, and the other 12 gates will be fully working in 2023.
- Modern and ample areas: it measures around 1 million square feet, twice as much as the previous terminal, and it is expected to handle 13.6 million passengers per year. So no more crowded and uncomfortable spaces at this terminal!
- A variety of seating spaces: from tandem seats to lounges, benches, and “workstations equipped with charging stations”.
- E-Gates: the terminal has fast and touchless screening to speed up the security process.
- Impressive artwork: The airport features local artists’ work, like a beautiful mural by Layqa Nuna Yawar, a giant and fascinating aerial sculpture created by Karyn Olivier, and vibrant portraits painted by Layqa Nuna Yawar. A total of 29 artists have unique installations at the new terminal.
- Home to major airlines: As reported by NorthJersey.com, the main airlines that will operate at this terminal are American Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue, and Air Canada. Delta Air Lines will join next year.
- Themed bathrooms: Inspired by the state areas, the bathrooms have unique designs based on New Jersey landscapes like metropolitan chic, Garden State theme, or the local coastal shores.
- Sustainable design: The terminal has integrated solar panels, new electric buses, a “cool roof”, efficient lighting, and water-efficient installations.
Hopefully, the new terminal will improve travelers' experiences and the airport’s service. Newark’s international airport was considered one of the worst airports in the United States this summer due to delays and flight cancellations.
The enhanced terminal should provide an optimized organization, faster scanning and check-in processes, and an overall improved experience for guests. Also, the new electric buses could improve transportation from Newark to Manhattan and other nearby destinations.
