New York is home to thousands of places to see and things to do. If you feel you've already tried out some of the more typical options, or you're looking for something off the beaten path, here are 10 suggestions for lesser-known things to do next time you're in New York.
1. Go On A Tour of St. Patrick's Catacombs
Catacombs may not be the first thing that comes to mind when New York City is mentioned, but if you’re looking to learn more about the darker history of the city, a tour of St. Patrick’s Cathedral – including the catacombs below – is a great way to do so. You can look forward to a 90 minute guided tour featuring the history of the cathedral, sure to make a memorable experience. Face masks are currently required in public areas.
2. Visit Koneko Cat Cafe
Here’s one for the cat lovers – enjoy some coffee, snacks, and meeting adorable cats all in one place at Koneko, one of New York’s cat cafes! This unique cafe offers Japanese pastries and snacks (as well as Sake), as well as access to their cattery. Best of all, the cats at Koneko are adoptable, meaning it could also be a great place to find a potential new member of your family! Due to COVID-19, advance reservations are currently required.
3. Stop By Queen's County Farm
If you’re looking to head a little bit out of the city, consider a visit to Queen’s County Farm. This historic farm began in 1697, and nowadays offers attractions hayrides as well as farm fresh eggs and honey for sale. The farm also has special events occasionally, such as the upcoming Apple Blossom Carnival.
4. Visit The Elevated Acre
Here’s a one-of-a-kind park you won’t want to miss on your next trip to New York. The Elevated Acre sets itself apart from other parks with a unique location – the rooftop of a parking garage in downtown manhattan.
5. Learn About Magic At Tannen's Magic Store
Whether your an aspiring magician, or you’re just looking for a unique store to swing by, consider checking out Tannen’s Magic Store. One of the oldest magic stores in New York, Tannen’s offers a variety of magic tricks ranging from close-up magic to stage magic, as well as books on magic.
6. Traverse The Vessel
See some one-of-a-kind architecture with a visit to The Vessel. This 150 sculpture allows guests to traverse its winding levels, making it a fun and unique stop during your next trip to New York.
7. Experience The Dream House
Experience a unique, immersive art piece with a visit to The Dream House. The Dream House was created in the 1990s and has existed in several locations. It currently exists within an unassuming apartment. It showcases sound and lighting created by two artists and offers guests an interactive experience as they traverse this art installation. The Dream House is currently open Thursdays and Saturdays from 2pm-12am on each day.
8. Have Some Fun At Wonderville
Wonderville is a unique venue in Brooklyn designed to showcase indie arcade games. Arcade games aren’t all you have to look forward to with a stop here, however. In addition to getting a chance to try your hand at some rare video games, you can also look forward to grabbing a drink at the attraction’s bar, or check whether the venue is hosting any interesting upcoming events!
9. View The Mmuseumm
This modern natural history museum offers a unique twist – it is miniature. Located in a small, elevator-sized space, the museum currently offers 24-hour viewing of the collection. It plans on offering timed entry tickets, as well as private tours, in the near future.
10. Bring Out Your Inner Spy At SpyScape
SpyScape is a unique museum that offers an interactive experience to its guests. Filled with spy-related exhibits, you can look forward to trying to crack codes or making it through a hall of lasers.
