USA

SafetyWing

SafetyWing started automatically covering Covid-19 as a part of their policies from the beginning. For 2021, they have been a worldwide leader for travelers looking for affordable coverage.

If you are in need of a really cheap travel insurance plan that covers basically everything, I highly recommend (and personally use) SafetyWing.

Covid coverage works the same as any other illness as long as it was not contracted before your coverage start date, and does not fall under any other policy exclusion or limitation. Testing for COVID-19 will only be covered if deemed medically necessary by a physician.

As of June 4, 2021, HeyMondo Premium also covers some bonus things that are very relevant in a covid-era travel world, like: medical care (including covid care) on-board a cruise ship, and hotel quarantine accommodation insurance (which countries like Costa Rica require you to have for entry).

Another thing we like about HeyMondo’s coverage is the handy app it comes with that allows you to chat with a doctor 24/7 when you have coverage. Small perks like that give travelers piece of mind.

World Nomads

World Nomads insurance has a ton of coverage and has become really popular with frequent travelers because of the broad range of inclusions, even for some sports and adventure seekers, and how easy it is to add or extend coverage on the go.

Currently, World Nomads is offering U.S. residents travel insurance that covers Covid-19 related illnesses.

does World Nomads cover covid-10?

For US Residents only:

World Nomads does not have an endemic or pandemic exclusion for policies purchased by U.S. residents, which means that you may make claims arising from the COVID-19 for the benefits specified in your policy.

Covid coverage/benefits for US residents who purchase World Nomads insurance:

Prior to traveling

  • If you, your traveling companion or a non-traveling family member contract COVID-19 or get quarantined, the plan benefits cover trip cancellation, provided that the events occurred after you purchase your policy and your coverage goes into effect. If you unexpectedly catch COVID-19 at home before you leave for your trip, you may also be eligible for trip cancellation coverage, which represents compensation for any pre-paid non-refundable travel expenses such as flights, hotels, and excursions.

During traveling

  • If you or your travel companion contract COVID-19 while traveling, you may be covered for emergency medical expenses, trip interruption coverage and medical evacuation when deemed necessary for your treatment.
  • Travel delay coverage should your scheduled transportation be set back for at least six hours for say, a border closing or travel ban that has been announced during your trip, government or a physician-mandated quarantine imposed.
  • Reimbursements may include doctors’ visits and hospital stays, and certain pre-paid travel arrangements that get disrupted as a result of the infection or the delay of your common carrier.
Types of Covid-19 related circumstances NOT covered by World Nomads travel insurance
  • Fear of travel is never a covered reason for any type of coverage. In no instances can you get reimbursed for canceling your trip because you’re worried about how the COVID-19 outbreak may impact your travels.
  • Events surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak for which you aren’t directly affected by the sickness. Examples: a conference you were planning to attend was canceled; you need to cancel your trip because flights out of your destination were shut down; you changed your mind about having your honeymoon in Italy because of the lockdown; your tour operator has canceled the trip before your departure.
  • World Nomads does not have a ‘Cancel for any reason’ clause.

You will likely have many more specific questions about the covid coverage World Nomads offers, so they have created a FAQ page with the most commonly asked questions like “What if the airline canceled my flight due to Covid?” or “Is quarantine covered under my policy?”

Staysure

Staysure is a great travel insurance for UK travelers who need some type of covid coverage.

While it’s not the most robust policy on the market in terms of covid related coverages, it does cover the basics.

COVID coverage/benefits for UK residents who purchase Staysure insurance:

Your policy will give you coronavirus (COVID-19) coverage for emergency medical expenses and repatriation if you catch the virus during your insured trip. This means if you develop COVID-19 while on holiday and need help, you’ll be covered as long as you have declared your pre-existing conditions.

For all other events that might be caused by coronavirus, including cancellations, you wouldn’t be covered to make a claim, but they might be able to help you change your plans.

Huge risk using these for countries like Korea or Thai where you'll be forced to stay in a hospital if fully asymptomatic and on the hook for $10,000s. You've been warned folks

Purchasing the Heymondo insurance was a breeze, no hassles to purchased, but i went through a few bumps during the course of my trips in Sept-Oct 2020 with damages of luggages and hotel stayed due to flight cancellations, Heymondo asked for so many paper works, i only reimbursed for 1 hotel stayed, i never get reimbursed for my damage luggages, why? Because the Airline in questions refused to pay and providing me information that Heymondo asked me in order to reimbursed me. Yes, within 24 hours Heymondo will assist you, but you will to provide documents that I don’t know the meanings of them, i provided photos with the date i was the airport, nope they want the document the airline doesn’t want to provide to me.

@Mamiho, don't think so. You can get the requested insurance at two Costa Rican insurance companies. I had contact with them about this as well; just look it up on the offical Costa Rican Tourist site, good luck! (I didn't go to Costa Rica though, I like to travel without restrictions and without a face-mask, so I'll wait until 2022 ;-))

@JOHN B FISHBACK, my situation is very similar. In the future I will be exiting Thailand for good.

Basically Thailand has said screw you to all expats over 70 years old, that includes those stuck in Thailand who cannot leave Thailand because they know they cannot get back in because they cannot get travel insurance. I have over $800,000 worth of condos in Thailand and I cannot even quarantine in my own condo! With over 20 million baht worth of collateral in my investment in Thailand, I shouldn't have to even have travel insurance. I lived there for 15 years and never had travel insurance. Now they want to slap this new ridiculous requirement on us so we can't use our condos nor even get back into the country. NOBODY should invest in Thailand if they expect to retire there as this is a perfect example of how Thailand will take your money and not let you enjoy your investment or your retirement home or your vacation home. I've stopped paying all condo dues as a result and recommend everybody else stuck outside the country BECAUSE WE CANNOT FULFILL THE INSURANCE REQUIREMENT do the same. I went to the US military Academy at West Point with a former Supreme Commander of Thai armed forces and a earlier alumni who saved Thailand from a communist invasion during the seventies

All Thai graduates of West Point should be ashamed the way their government is cheating,ขี้โกง,foreigners.
