3 New Resorts Opening On This Island Near Cancun

Cancun remains one of the international travelers' favorite destinations in Mexico and its economy and infrastructures have been rapidly and constantly growing during the past few years, despite the pandemic crisis.

The ambitious Train Maya project has been announced to be launched in 2023 and will connect Cancun to many fascinating hotspots in the Yucatan peninsula. And this popular destination will not only have more transportation options for travelers but also more lodging alternatives, more attractions, and more variety.

Now, 13 kilometers off the coast from Cancun, the spectacular island Isla Mujeres will have 3 new resorts very soon. Tourists will have more rooms available to stay at this iconic island that hosts one of the most beautiful beaches in the World: Playa Norte.

The island mayor, Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has recently announced that three new hotel resort projects, that are already under construction, will open soon this year, offering jobs to local residents and new services to visitors.

As reported by the Mexican news site Reportur, the new resorts will add 2,000 new rooms for a total of over 10,000 rooms available in Isla Mujeres. Travelers will have more options to stay on the island and enjoy more time there and not only rely on the popular full-day tours.

Gómez also said that local authorities expect around 30,000 visitors to the island per week during the next holiday season and expect a higher occupancy due to the high demand for tourism in Cancun. This year, in April, hotels in Cancun were already at 90% occupancy for the summer season and local authorities expect that tourism trends continue to increase.

New Resorts In Isla Mujeres

The mayor did not specify which companies were offering new resorts on the beautiful island of Isla Mujeres. However, a few months ago, Secrets Resorts & Spas announced that the brand—part of the AMR Collection and the World of Hyatt— will be opening a new resort in Isla Mujeres by the end of the year. The new Secret resort is expected to start receiving guests in December.

Secrets Impression Isla Mujeres will be just 25 minutes away from Cancun city and will offer travelers special services for couples and unique luxury experiences. The resort will be for adults only —the brand target— and will offer visitors an all-inclusive experience, with unlimited services and 24-hour room service, unlimited drinks, butler services, catamaran services, endless entertainment, and more.

Caribbean Island Resort, on the other hand, also announced a few days ago that two new projects were pending approval and would add 745 rooms. According to the information shared on the news site El Economista, one of the projects would be a resort and the other one a boutique hotel.

Reportur also shared information about other companies in the industry interested in developing projects in Isla Mujeres. In the past few years, major international brands like Riu, Catalonia, Meliá, Planet Hollywood, TRS, and Grand Palladium have invested in this destination.

More About Isla Mujeres

This charming island offers visitors spectacular places to snorkel, experience the Caribbean and enjoy local culture. It’s one of the most popular full-day tours from Cancun.

To get to Isla Mujeres, travelers can take a ferry, the most common transportation, from Cancun in Puerto Juarez. It takes about 25 minutes to get to the island —the views of the deep blue waters are spectacular— and it costs around 25 dollars.

Isla Mujeres offers travelers gorgeous beaches, delicious food, and a great variety of restaurants, and good shops and stores in colorful markets. One of the main attractions is the beach Playa Norte, known as the best beach in Mexico for its soft sand and delicious clear blue water.

Sunsets in Isla Mujeres are a natural show visitors tend to admire and adore —even from the warm waters—, and it is not usually a crowded spot.
