The southernmost city in California, San Diego is one of the country’s best vacation spots. Home to all of the best features of Southern California – sun, beaches, and lots of fun – and without quite as many heavy crowds as Los Angeles has, it’s no wonder. Here are 6 reasons you should consider adding it to your upcoming vacation plans in 2022.
1. You'll Be Able To Relax On One Of Its Many Beaches
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that San Diego is home to some truly amazing beaches. You’ll want to consider checking out some of the most well-known ones, such as Mission Beach and La Jolla Shores. Don’t overlook some of the lesser-known ones either, though. Swami’s Beach, for example, is a well-loved spot for surfing. And a visit to Torrey Pines Beach and Preserve is a great way to combine hiking with a fun day on the beach.
2. The City Is Full Of Hidden Gems
San Diego is home to a ton of unique and sometimes quirky hidden gems that are worth exploring. For some sightseeing suggestions: Head down past Scripp’s Pier at La Jolla Shores to see the Mushroom House. While in the area, check out Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave. For places to explore, head over to Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve to enjoy a variety of trails and some gorgeous waterfalls. If you’re up for some adventure, there’s also a number of hidden swings located throughout the city. The downside is they are sometimes vandalized or replaced, making them difficult to add to a definitive itinerary. However, the search for them alone can make for a fun afternoon!
3. You Can Explore Balboa Park
Balboa Park is easily one of the best places in the city to visit, regardless of whether you’re going for the first time or stopping by again. It’s home to a variety of attractions. Just some of them include museums, walking trails, restaurants, and street performers. It’s also a great place to take some amazing vacation photos for Instagram – check out one of the park’s gardens for some stunning and vibrant natural backdrops.
4. It's Not Quite As Touristy As L.A.
One of the best things about San Diego is its southern Californian feel without as much of the touristy energy that can come with visiting Los Angeles. While there’s still plenty to do for visitors – and some popular spots do admittedly get crowded – there’s no shortage of lesser-known areas that aren’t far out of the way. La Jolla Shores, for example, is a gorgeous and popular beach to visit. During the summer, the main section can get pretty crowded, but a short stroll down the sand towards Scripp's Pier will not only bring you to some more solitude but also a variety of tidepools.
5. It's Perfect For Outdoor Recreation
San Diego offers some prime spots for nearly every sort of outdoor recreation. Surfers, for example, will want to check Del Mar Beach as well as La Jolla shores. Del Mar is known for its good conditions year-round. Additionally, itts size gives more space for crowds to spread out. La Jolla Shores, meanwhile, is a great spot for beginners or those looking to learn surfing. If you’re more interested in kayaking or snorkeling, San Diego has plenty of spots for that as well such as Mission Bay and La Jolla Cove. Finally, if staying on land is more your thing, there's a variety of trails interspersed throughout the city perfect for a hike, jog, or bike ride.
6. There's No Shortage Of Delicious Places To Eat At
You definitely won’t go hungry in San Diego! This city is home to a huge assortment of excellent places to enjoy a meal. No matter what type of food you’re in the mood for, it’s sure to have some options. For brunch, check out Snooze. Snooze offers your traditional breakfast fare in addition to a variety of fun options such as Bloody Marys or pineapple pancakes. If you’re looking for some casual but delicious food for later in the day, head over to The Habit Burger Grill to enjoy one of their charbroiled burgers. Finally, if you’re looking for some fine dining, you’re sure to enjoy a meal at Eddie V's Prime Seafood.
