Analysis of airfare prices has found that airfare from the US to Europe is at the lowest price it has been for the last five years. The revelation comes as the US overturned its ban on entry for citizens from both the UK and the EU, fuelling hopes that a wave of British and European travelers could soon be descending upon the US to breathe life into its struggling travel and tourism industries at long last.
Whilst the US may not be on the EU's safe list for travel at present, several European countries are still allowing Americans to enter – meaning that there could be sizeable activity on both sides of the pond. Here's a closer look at the findings from the report on European airfare prices, and the look at the impact that the US decision to lift its travel restrictions could have.
European Air Fare Low – What Travelers Should Know
The analysis of Airfare trends was carried out by Hopper, a travel app the specializes in analyzing data in order to predict flight prices and curate personalized travel recommendations for its users. According to their website, their app has been downloaded more than 62 million times, whilst they also claim to have saved their users a cumulative total in excess of $4 billion. Claiming to also be responsible for planning 175 million trips, that figure could be set to rise following its recent report.
Hopper's research has revealed that the average price for a round trip ticket from the US to Europe has dropped below $600 – the lowest price recorded in the past five years. The figures have dropped dramatically in recent weeks; just last month, when the EU travel advisory went into effect, the average round trip cost was $665, whereas at present the average price is just $565 – a significant reduction of $100 from the price of the flight tickets.
Some of Europe's premier destinations are also available for much less than the current average. The cheapest destination found by Hopper was Madrid, with round trip airfare costing just $427 – 33% cheaper than it was in 2019. Also available for less than $500 were return flights to Lisbon, Barcelona and Dublin, whilst the likes of Reykjavik, Milan and Rome were also options that came below the European average of $565.
Analysis from Hopper also gave an insight into the trends and search habits of American travelers. Madrid was the most-searched-for city, and Spain was the most-searched-for country – understandably given the low price of flights to both Madrid and Barcelona. Helsinki and Dublin took the silver and bronze medals respectively when it came to rounding the top three most-searched-for cities, whilst France and Ireland were also among the most popular countries searched for by Hopper users.
Flights to Europe increased 33% on the platform over the past week, despite several countries changing their entry requirements to restrict entry for American travelers. However, the US decision to allow travelers from the EU and the UK to visit could see more European countries dropping their restrictions once more in an act of reciprocity.
With prices lower than ever and the holiday season around the corner, bookings for travelers heading from the US to the EU or vice versa could be set to take off, making up for the summer of travel that many predicted but failed to be delivered.
