Alaska Airlines has sweetened the deal for becoming a part of their Mileage Plan family when the airline announced this week a new partnership with Lyft. Taking trips to the airport, getting to your family Thanksgiving, or to that party on New Year’s Eve will all be rewarded, helping you travel even further than your city.

How Many Miles Can I Earn?

Alaska Miles members can now earn 1 mile for every $1 spent on an eligible Lyft ride in the U.S and Canada. The companies will also be running a promotional offer throughout the holiday season, where it will be doubling the reward to 2 miles for every $1 spent until December 31, 2022. Travelers who also have an Alaska Airlines visa card will also receive an additional mile for every dollar when using the credit card for payment on Lyft.

Unfortunately, for people who prefer to take the greener option and travel by Lyft’s bikes and scooters, these rides won’t be eligible to earn miles.

What Is The Fine Print?

  • Just like all Lyft partnerships, accounts need to be linked up beforehand, so don’t think you’ll be earning miles automatically without taking this step. To link your account, go to AlaskaLyft.com.
  • You only earn money on the dollars spent on the base fare, so this excludes earning money on the additional taxes, fees, tolls, and tips. For example, if your total ride cost was $25, but taxes, tips, and other fees were $6, you would earn miles on the $19 (19 miles).
  • If you’re also a Delta SkyMiles member, you won’t be able to earn miles for both airlines. You will need to choose your preferred airline in the Rewards section of the Lyft app, but you can change which travel partner you want to use at any time in the app.
  • Lyft’s bikes and scooters are not eligible to receive miles, but eligible ride options include; Lyft Standard, Wait & Save, Priority Pickup, Shared, Shared Saver, Preferred, Lyft XL, Lux, Lux Black, and Lux Black XL rides.
  • If the costs of the ride are split between multiple people, only the person who requested the ride will earn the miles.

Does Lyft Offer Other Travel Rewards?

Lyft is no stranger to rewarding riders with travel miles, as the transportation app teamed up with Delta Airlines in 2017 to reward Delta SkyMiles members. Delta travelers can also earn 1 mile for every $1 spent and 2 miles when taking a trip to the airport.

If you prefer to collect miles on your accommodation, Hilton Honors members can earn 3 points for every $1 spent on Lyft rides and 2 points on shared Lyft rides.

For Chase credit card holders who prefer to redeem their rewards on travel and have a Sapphire, Freedom, or Ink credit card, they can earn either 5X or 10X the number of reward points or 5% cash back (dependent on the card).

Mastercard offers $5 cash back on 3 rides in a month for its World and World Elite cards. The card-linked offer platform, Dosh, also offers a 2% cash-back on eligible rides.

Where Can I Go With Alaska Airlines?

The good news is Alaska is part of the Oneworld global alliance, which means that you can redeem your miles on more than 20 Oneworld and partner airlines. These include other major airlines such as American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Qatar, and more.

To stretch your miles further, Alaska offers over 450 routes, with 60 of these routes being international. The airline serves four different countries (Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico), with its most popular international destination being Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and its most popular domestic route being between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Alaska Airlines also offers a subscription service called Flight Pass, which uses a flat fee, starting at $49 a month, to fly on non-stop routes in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. Paying a set amount each month entitles you to roundtrip flight credits, and you also can earn one mile for every mile you fly on the Flight Pass.
