Alaska Airlines has just unveiled a new flight pass subscription service that will see passengers able to purchase and take frequent, flexible flights along the West Coast of the United States. With international travel still currently subjected to unpredictable restriction changes, border closure and lots of red tape, the move is bound to be welcomed by travelers looking to scratch their traveling itch with domestic flights this year.
Rated as the sixth largest airline in the US, Alaska's new flight pass offerings are testament to how airlines have been forced to be creative in these times of uncertainty during the pandemic, and offers travelers the chance to make significant savings on flights to places such as California, Phoenix and Las Vegas. Here's everything you need to know about the flight pass, including pricing details, route options and other important information.
Flight Pass Details – What Travelers Should Know
A new concept for many in the industry, a press release with details about Alaska's new flight pass was posted yesterday, describing the service as an “innovative, subscription-based travel offering that takes value and flexibility to the next level.” Two packages are available, with each of the airline's packages giving travelers the opportunity to take advantage of as many as 24 round trips in a year, which works out as two round trips per month.
The two packages available to travelers are as follows:
- Flight Pass: the Flight Pass package starts for as little as $49 per month, as is the cheapest option available to travelers. However, whilst this is the best value package for travelers, sacrifices are made to flexibility, as it requires booking at least 14 days before travel, and as early as 90 days in advance. Perfect for those who like to plan ahead.
- Flight Pass Pro: Flight Pass Pro is much more expensive than the basic flight pass, with its price starting at $199 per month, however it offers travelers much higher levels of flexibility. It allows travelers to make same-day bookings up to two hours before departure, and as early as 90 days in advance, making it ideal for those prone to booking last minute getaways.
Either of the flight pass packages can be purchased after creating an account on the flight pass website. Once the package has been selected, travelers can pick whether they want 6, 12 or 24 roundtrip flights. According to the press release, flight pass users are still required to pay applicable government taxes and airport fees on each of their flights on top of their monthly subscription fee and a nominal fare – usually as low as $0.01.
Those who have the pass can benefit from 100 daily flights from 16 different airports. The list of airports is as follows:
California: Sacramento, Sonoma, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Fresno, Burbank, Orange County, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco
Nevada: Las Vegas, Reno
Arizona: Phoenix
According to Alaska Airlines, “most Americans are planning domestic travel in 2022, particularly to warm-weather and beach destinations, and some are even more willing to be spontaneous and flexible on future trips.” With thirteen airports in California serviced plus some of the other major West Coast attractions, it's safe to say the flight pass has warm-weather and beach destinations covered – whether travelers will see value in the subscription service however remains to be seen.
