Argentina has extended its border closure until at least February 28, 2021. Under the current restrictions, almost all foreign travelers are restricted from entering Argentina.
Chief of Staff, Santiago Cafiero announced the extension on Monday citing a second wave of Covid-19 cases throughout January.
Argentina's largest airline, Aerolineas Argentinas confirmed the extension in a press release.
“We comply with the decree that prohibits the entry of foreigners into Argentine territory that has been extended until 02/28/2021. All travel agents should notify upcoming passengers of the extension.”
The decision to extend the ban came after “a new report (from the Health Ministry) that recommends maintaining and adopting preventive measures to protect the public health,” state news agency Telam said.
Direct Relatives Of Argentines Exempt
The National Directorate for Migration (DNM) announced that foreigners who are direct relatives of Argentines will be allow to enter the country.
Flights from Mexico, United States and Europe will only be able to land in Argentina with a maximum capacity of 30% while flights from Brazil can be 50% full.
The National Directorate for Migration (DNM) has said that the following groups will be exempt from the entry ban.
- Nationals
- Foreign residents
- Non-resident foreigners who are direct relatives of Argentine citizens
The press release stated that the National Directorate for Migration will be announcing the steps that exempt travelers need to take in order to enter Argentina.
The country has already been requiring proof of a negative Covid-19 test no older than 72 hours but no details were given on if a quarantine would be added.
Argentines Told To Not Travel
The decision recommended that nationals and foreign residents, especially those over 60 years of age or belonging to high-risk groups, “defer their trips abroad,” unless they are for essential reasons.
Argentina saw 5.3 million tourists in 2019, with tourism contributing to an average of 10% of the countries GDP.
Argentina has confirmed more than 1.9 million cases of Covid-19 and 48,249 deaths as of Tuesday, February 2nd and has been one of the most locked down countries in the world throughout the pandemic.
