The Hotel Association of Cancun is planning to provide travelers with Covid-19 test options for their return trips home as travel restrictions continue to tighten.

Hotel Association Head, Roberto Cintrón Gomez says he is in talks with the state Governor Carlos Joaquin about implementing new testing procedures and facilities for Americans and Canadians returning home.

The move to provide travelers with testing comes after the Canadian government announced it would require all travelers to provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test in order to enter Canada

The test must be no older than 72 hours which means travelers need to work within tight timelines to be tested, receive results and return home while the test result is still valid.

Although the United States has not yet mandated a testing entry requirement, Gomez believes that it's only a matter of time before U.S. travelers will require them as well.

Rather than waiting for that to happen, the Cancun Hotel Association is taking action now to protect its two main tourism markets.

“We already have a place for a laboratory that can be installed for the taking of samples at the Coral Beach Hotel, Gomez said reported the Riviera Maya Times.

Several private laboratories have shown interest in providing the testing with the lowest price for tourists being US $100.00. “We will continue to look for better prices to avoid high costs for our visitors.”

Four hotels near the airport have also been set up to deal with patients that have tested positive. The infected visitors and their families will be given reduced rates if they are unable to return home due to the positive test result.

Cancun is currently rated under the ‘Yellow' epidemiological warning light system. This allows hotels and restaurants to operate at 60% of normal capacity. With the surging popularity of Cancun, hotels were able to apply for a special permit over the holidays to increase their capacity to 80% while following strict health protocols.

The Cancun airport has recorded over 6.4 million tourists during the pandemic making it one of the top destinations in the world during Covid-19.

Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Joaquín stated the number of positive Covid-19 cases has grown with a greater hospital occupation that he said “is worrying and takes a lot more discipline.”

Refuse testing on re-entry. All people have the right to return to their own countries. This is totalitarianism and it won't change if we mindlessly comply.
