Dominican Republic Extends Free Travel Insurance For All Tourists

The Dominican Republic has extended its free travel insurance program for all tourists staying in hotels until April 2021. 

The Caribbean island began the promotion in August to bring back more tourists and help rebuild its shattered tourism sector. The free insurance covers all travelers in case they fall ill or have to change plans due to Covid-19.

According to the Dominican Republic Tourism Minister, David Collado, the complimentary insurance program will be extended until at least April 30th, 2021. 

“The free assistance plan has been a success, as it contributes to position ourselves worldwide as a safe tourist destination, where all kinds of experiences can be enjoyed with the peace of mind that there is a perfectly prepared medical system to attend to visitors in in case of any eventuality and at no cost to them,” the Tourism Minister said according to Reportur.

What The Free Travel Insurance Includes

The free insurance includes the following: 

  • Coverage for emergencies
  • Ambulatory care
  • Hospitalizations
  • Medicine
  • Lodging for extended stays due to an infection
  • Flight changes due to an infection

How To Enroll For The Free Insurance

All tourists are automatically covered once they check into their hotel. There is no action required by the traveler to activate the insurance which is fully covered by the Dominican Republic government.

Influx Of Tourists For New Year

Over 1000 flights are expected to land in the Dominican Republic before the New Year. The island is setting new records for passenger traffic during the pandemic as travelers take advantage of the holiday season.

Relaxed Entry Requirements

The Dominican Republic has some of the most relaxed entry requirements in the world. There are no mandatory tests to be taken before arrival and no quarantines. The Dominican Republic government did state that up to 5% of arrivals will be randomly selected for a Covid-19 breath test.

U.S. Drops Level 4 Travel Warning For Dominican Republic

The United States government dropped the level 4 ‘do not travel' advisory for the Dominican Republic to a level 3 ‘reconsider travel' back in November.

However the CDC still rates the Dominican Republic as a level 4 warning ‘Very High Risk Level' of Covid-19′ and that travel to the country should be avoided.

In searching the websites some are listed as apart hotels and ogher WORDS including the word HOTEL...how do we know which are acceptable? What does and what doesn't the government insurance include as a hotel.. I will bet air B and B is chewing on their own shorts over this one

This is welcome news. We are scheduled to travel to the DR next month and, while we'd already purchased travel insurance, it's nice to know the Dominican government is looking out for us.
