Frontier Airlines is expanding its Caribbean service. Beginning this May, the low-cost airline will add new direct routes from 7 U.S. cities to beautiful Puerto Rico. Frontier is also launching a service to Ponce, Puerto Rico for the first time. The new flight additions mean Frontier will soon have 19 nonstop routes to Puerto Rico, more than any other airline.
This news comes on the heels of an announcement that Frontier will launch a new unlimited flight pass this summer.
Why People Love Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has long been a popular destination for U.S. tourists. It is close, well-connected, affordable, and welcoming. It is especially convenient for American travelers because they use the U.S. Dollar, and no passport or visa is needed to enter. The beautiful beaches, thriving culture, and exciting nightlife mean that visitors can have a versatile vacation without traveling far or spending too much. And now that Frontier is adding additional 7 additional direct routes from the U.S., there is no better time to plan a vacation to Puerto Rico.
New Routes Into San Juan
Most passengers traveling to Puerto Rico fly into San Juan Airport, which is a 15-minute ride from the city center. This vibrant capital city is where visitors can have it all – historic sites, beautiful architecture, fantastic food, and incredible nightlife. The city is also in close proximity to several beaches and is a good base for exploring other areas. A can’t-miss is Old San Juan – an incredible place to explore the city’s 500 years of history. Its storied forts, old city walls, and cobblestone streets make it the perfect place to take it all in.
Passengers from 5 new U.S. cities can now fly direct to and from Luis Muñoz International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Service will begin in early May. The new routes to SJU are:
- Flights from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) launch on May 4, 2023, and will operate 4 times each week
- Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) will begin service to San Juan on May 5, 2023, flying 4 times per week
- Service between Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) and San Juan will commence on May 4, 2023, operating 6 times a week
- Daily flights to San Juan will depart Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) beginning May 4, 2023
- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) launches daily flights to San Juan on May 4, 2023
In addition to the U.S. routes to San Juan, Frontier just announced thrice weekly service from Cancun starting May 25. Because Cancun is well connected to the U.S., this gives travelers even more options for affordable flights to Puerto Rico.
New Route Into Ponce
Travelers headed to Puerto Rico’s southern district can fly into Mercedita International Airport in Ponce, Puerto Rico’s second-largest city. The airport, which was closed for a year during the pandemic, has been reopened since the spring of 2021.
Ponce is known as Museum City and is a great place to become immersed in Puerto Rican culture. The city is home to art, music, and history museums, and visitors can also tour nearby coffee farms and distilleries. While the city itself is worth a visit, flying into Ponce also gives vacationers easier access to the island’s remote southern beaches. It is also a great base for those seeking outdoor adventures.
- Starting May 4, 2023 Frontiers will fly from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Mercedita International Airport (PSE) in Ponce. Flights will operate 3 times each week.
New Route Into Aguadilla
With this new route into Aguadilla, more Frontier passengers will have easy access to the beautiful northwest regions of Puerto Rico. Aguadilla is the place to be for anyone wanting to relax and enjoy the water. Home to fantastic surf spots like Crash Boat Beach and Wishing Well, it is also a great place for snorkeling, diving, and other watersports.
- Tampa International Airport (TPA) will fly to Rafael Hernández International Airport (BQN) in Aguadilla 3 times a week beginning May 4, 2023
