How much does a hotel room cost in 2023?

According to Money.com, hotel prices are up 54% in January 2023 compared to the same time in 2022. That's a big jump, meaning that hotel stays can eat into your travel budget in a big way.

The reasons for the increase in hotel prices this year include inflation, higher occupancy as travel continues to rebound, and a tighter supply of rooms due to slowdowns in hotel construction caused by lockdowns and restrictions that were imposed during Covid.

Staffing issues and shortages continue to affect hotels too, which further contributes to the tight supply and rising prices.

While it's still possible to score a good deal on hotel rooms right now (keep reading for tips on how to do so!), prices are higher than before.

How To Save Money Booking Hotels This Year

If the average hotel room prices above are giving you sticker shock, here are some tips for saving money on booking hotel rooms this year:

1. Travel during the off-season. Off-season hotel rates are much cheaper, and as a bonus, you won't have to contend with as many crowds. The only drawback is the potential for less-than-ideal weather. For example, Cancun in August or September is cheap, but you may have the occasional downpour. Europe in winter is beautiful and uncrowded, but it's also much chillier.

2. Book direct and join hotel loyalty programs. Booking direct with a hotel often offers the lowest rate, and signing up for a hotel chain's loyalty program can earn you additional perks like free breakfast, late check-out, and accumulating loyalty points.

3. Use credit card sign-up bonuses. Many hotel chains such as Marriott and Hilton offer credit cards with lucrative sign-up bonuses, like enough loyalty points to book 2-4 free hotel nights. This can be a great way to reduce the cost of your next vacation.

4. Book through a cash-back portal. Using a free cash-back portal like Rakuten.com can help you save money when booking hotels. For example, Rakuten offers 2.5% cash back on Hilton bookings, 3% on IHG bookings, 3% on Holiday Inn bookings, and 2% on Best Western bookings.

5. Roll the dice on prepaid hotel rates. One of the best ways to save money on hotels is by booking the prepaid, non-refundable rate. However, this is a gamble because unless you have really good travel insurance, you will not be able to cancel your booking and get your money back. But if you're confident about your travel plans, prepaid rates are often much cheaper than refundable rates.
