The paradise island of Madeira, Portugal has officially announced that it will drop entry requirements including Covid-19 testing for travelers who have been vaccinated.
According to the Madeira Regional Tourism Board, “If you have already been vaccinated, you are automatically exempted from mandatory RT-PCR testing upon arrival in Madeira and Porto Santo.”
How Vaccination Exemption Works
Travelers that have received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine must bring proof of vaccination in the form of a vaccination passport or certificate validated by your country of origin, in English that includes the following information:
- Name
- Date of birth
- Healthcare system ID
- Vaccine type and dates of two vaccine doses
The proof of vaccination or vaccine passport must be uploaded to the Madeira Safe app or website prior to arrival. Ensure you also bring the physical copy in case you are asked upon arrival.
Vaccinate travelers must ensure that they have followed all recommendations regarding their specific vaccine before traveling to Madeira including the activation time and immunity schedule.
Entry Requirements For Travelers
Madeira has been to international travelers from the EU since July 1, 2020 and requires that visitors who have not been vaccinated present proof of a negative Covid-19 PCR test no older than 72 hours prior to departure.
Travel to Portugal, including Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azores, is limited to EU/EEA nationals and their family members. Additional third party countries including Australia, China, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand are permitted for any purpose providing you are also a resident in one of these countries.
U.S. citizens without EU residency are still banned from travel to Portugal.
If a passenger shows up in Madeira without proof of a negative Covid-19 test, they will be tested at the airport free of charge. Travelers could experience delays on beginning their vacation in Madeira.
Travelers Who Have Proof Of Recovery Are Exempt From Testing
Travelers who have recovered from Covid-19 and have proof of recovery within the last 90 days are also exempt from testing requirements.
