Planning a winter vacation this year?
Here’s the average cost of a winter trip in some of the most popular destinations this year, according to research from travel insurance company Squaremoth.
Their analysis identifies the average cost of a vacation to each destination, as well as the average length of trips to each place, based on travel insurance policies that have been taken out for trips this winter.
The one element that’s not identified in the research is the number of travelers; however, it’s safe to assume that these numbers reflect a mixture ranging from solo travelers to larger families traveling together.
Depending on how many people you’re traveling with and your travel style (budget, mid-range, or luxury), you can expect to spend less or more than these averages, but they offer a good ballpark estimate.
The United States is the most popular winter travel destination, accounting for nearly 14% of trips.
The average trip cost is $5,164.08, with an average trip length of 8 days, for an average daily cost of $645.51.
Closely following the U.S. in popularity is Mexico, making up over 12% of winter trips. Mexico is an excellent destination for winter vacations if you want to avoid frigid temperatures and enjoy the sun and beaches.
Mexico is more affordable than the United States for a winter getaway. Trips have an average length of 8 days, but an average total cost of $4,232.62, bringing the average daily cost to $529.07.
Boasting some of the most stunning beaches in the world, the Bahamas is known for being a relaxing tropical getaway.
Frequent flights and proximity to the United States make it a popular getaway for those looking to escape the cold during the winter.
The Bahamas is also more affordable than the United States or Mexico. An average 7-day vacation to the Bahamas costs $3,380.07, working out to $482.86 per day.
Germany is a popular winter destination because of its beautiful Christmas markets, known for being some of the best in Europe. It’s also home to stunning castles and picturesque towns along the Romantic Road.
Unsurprisingly, the average trip length to Germany is longer, coming in at 12 days. Many Americans visiting Europe want to make the long journey worth it by extending their trip for as long as possible.
The average cost of a trip to Germany is $5,297.42, which works out to $441.45 per day.
Costa Rica is known for its beautiful beaches, diverse wildlife, jungles, volcanoes, and adventure activities. It scores points for being the safest country in Latin America and is a popular winter destination for those who want an active vacation.
However, Costa Rica can be very pricy, unlike more affordable destinations in the region like Nicaragua or Guatemala. The average cost of a 10-day vacation to Costa Rica is $6,807.11, or $680.71 per day.
The Dominican Republic has been increasing in popularity as a Caribbean destination known for its great beaches and all-inclusive resorts.
The average cost of a trip to this popular winter destination is $4,632.98, with an average trip duration of 8 days. This makes the average daily cost of a vacation in the Dominican Republic $579.12.
Like Germany, France is a fantastic European destination to visit during the winter. From the lights of Paris to the Christmas markets of Strasbourg, this country is beautiful during the winter months.
It’s also cheaper to visit, especially in the off-season winter months of January through March. The average cost of a 13-day trip to France is $5,492.42, which makes the total daily cost $422.49 per day.
