What are the top international travel destinations for Americans going into 2024?
New data from Google Destination Insights reveals the most-searched travel hotspots for the new year. Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe top the rankings, while some Asian and Middle Eastern destinations are also increasing in popularity.
Here are the top 10 destinations for American travelers right now:
1. Cancun, Mexico
Cancun remains the number one most popular destination for American travelers. With nearly 40 cities across the U.S. having nonstop flights to Cancun, it makes it one of the most convenient international destinations to visit.
Just a short flight from the United States, travelers can discover gorgeous Caribbean beaches, fascinating ancient ruins, and nonstop fun and entertainment.
2024 will be a great time to visit Cancun because the long-awaited Maya Train is finally opening. This will connect Cancun to even more destinations in Mexico.
Also, several new Mayan ruins near Cancun are also opening to the public for the first time in 2024.
2. London, United Kingdom
Many American travelers are planning to hop across the pond in 2024 and visit London. The capital of the UK is a popular destination for American travelers because there's less of a cultural barrier and many cities in the U.S. have affordable nonstop flights to London.
Although London is beautiful and well worth a visit for at least several days, it shouldn't be the only place you spend time in!
The UK is home to many other awesome cities such as Bath and Oxford that are just a short train ride away from London. Or you can explore a bit further afield in a historic destination like Edinburgh, Scotland.
3. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
For American travelers looking for the ultimate tropical beach getaway, there's no better destination than Punta Cana. This hotspot in the Dominican Republic is known for its stunning beaches and abundance of all-inclusive resorts, perfect for a relaxing vacation.
It's no surprise that the Dominican Republic is one of the most popular destinations in the world right now because you can enjoy paradise without breaking the bank.
Punta Cana can be a very affordable destination, especially if you don't mind traveling outside the peak season — basically any time from May until November.
4. Paris, France
Paris is a polarizing entry on this list because while it remains extremely popular with American travelers, the city is often cited as an example of the negative effects of over-tourism.
Some tourists who visit Paris report extreme crowds, long lines, dirty streets, and other issues like pickpockets and scammers that make for an unpleasant experience. In 2024, Paris is hosting the Olympics, which means it will be more crowded than ever during the summer.
My advice? Visit Paris during the off-season. Early spring (March and April) and late fall (October and November) are two of the best times to visit Paris for low crowds and mild weather.
5. Rome, Italy
Another hotspot that's popular with American travelers right now is Rome. Italy's capital, nicknamed the Eternal City, has been enchanting visitors for a very long time.
Tourists flock to the city to see its iconic ancient landmarks like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. It's also a top destination for foodies keen to experience Roman cuisine.
Rome is definitely a destination that should be on your 2024 travel bucket list if you're interested in history, culture, food, nightlife, or art — Rome has it all!
