A recent survey has revealed the top 5 countries that American travelers plan on traveling to this year. With 2022 now looking considerably more restriction-free than the year that came before it, Americans are set to make up for lost time this summer when it comes to travel – and these five destinations are firmly in their sights.
Here’s a look at the survey, which five countries it revealed are set to be the most popular for Americans, and what their entry requirements are at present.
Travel Survey Results
If a recent survey is anything to go by, Americans are set to unearth their passports and travel in their droves this summer. The travel survey, which was carried out by International Medical Group (IMG), found that 96% of respondents planned to travel internationally this year, with 38% of travelers planning to travel abroad three or more times this year – an increase of 141% compared to last year.
In terms of when they intend to travel, 71% of respondents stated that they planned to travel internationally before October 2022, suggesting that this summer could be set to be record-breaker. The survey also shows that, whilst restrictions are being eased at present, travelers are still wary of things changing once more, with 53% of respondents more likely to purchase a travel protection/travel medical plan due to the risks, concerns, and impacts of Covid-19. Here’s a look at the five countries that respondents said they were hoping to visit more than any other.
Mexico
Unsurprisingly, the survey highlighted Mexico as the top destination for American travelers this year.
Boasting world-class beaches and some of the best food in the world, this neighbor to the U.S. also has some of the easiest Covid-19-related entry requirements. One of the first countries to drop its restrictions, all travelers need to enter Mexico is a passport – with no proof of vaccination or negative test result required – making it easy to see why it's so in demand.
Travelers can head to the Caribbean side and check out Tulum, Cancun, Isla Mujeres or Playa De Carmen, or take it to the west coast in cities like Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, or Cabo.
Canada
Traditionally the second most popular international destination for Americans, Canada also came second in the survey’s list of the destinations Americans are looking to visit this year. The US’ northerly neighbor removed its testing requirement for vaccinated arrivals at the start of the month and recently allowed unvaccinated children to enter, but unvaccinated travelers are still currently unable to visit Canada for tourism purposes.
The Canadian cities of Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto are most popular with American tourists.
France
Further afield, the third most in-demand destination for American travelers is France. Known for its inherent romance, gastronomic offerings, and historic cultural institutions, France has been easy to visit since the US was placed on its ‘green list’ back in March.
Vaccinated Americans can enter test-free, whilst unvaccinated travelers can enter with a negative PCR test not older than 72 hours or an antigen test not older than 48 hours.
Italy
Whether they are planning to absorb the culture of the Eternal City of Rome or take advantage of Milan’s world-class shopping opportunities, the survey revealed Italy was the fourth most desired destination for American travelers.
At present, travelers will need either a Covid-19 vaccination certificate, an official certificate of recovery, or a negative test result in order to travel to Italy – but these requirements could be set to change next month.
Portugal
Perhaps the only surprise on the list, Portugal beat other traditionally popular destinations for American travelers such as the UK and the Dominican Republic to become the 5th most-sought after destination according to the survey.
The US Embassy in Lisbon recommends that American travelers visiting Portugal arrive with either a PCR/NAAT test taken 72 hours before boarding or a Rapid Antigen/TRAg test taken 24 hours before boarding.
