Some say January is a depressing month, but for forward-thinking travelers it can be one of the most exciting times of the year.
Many of us use the cold, dark days to sit down with our favorite travel guides and booking apps and get some serious plans laid out for the year ahead.
When picking out our most wanted destinations, it helps to know which places are getting the most attention and rave reviews from fellow travelers.
Luckily, Tripadvisor has some answers for us in the shape of its Top Destinations list for 2024, part of its annual Travelers’ Choice Awards.
Let’s count down the top 7 locations together and start dreaming about that first time pushing back and taking off this year.
7) Cancun, Mexico
One of Mexico’s star attractions, Cancun just can’t keep itself off these kinds of lists.
Cancun is the epicenter of Quintana Roo state, and is better connected in 2024 with the introduction of the Maya train and an increase in the number of flights from the U.S.
It’s hard to imagine there will be a time when Cancun won’t be popular – it’s the gateway to some simply sublime Caribbean coastline as well as fascinating history and culture too.
6) Paris, France
It’s a little surprising to see Paris rank so highly here, given that it should probably be avoided in 2024 due to massively inflated costs caused by the city hosting the Olympic Games this summer.
However, the magic of Paris continues to lure travelers in from around the world – whether that’s to see global icons such as the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, or just to amble around its pretty cobbled streets sampling the café culture.
5) Rome, Italy
Rome is one of those cities that you might think is overhyped, but trust me, it’s worth the effort.
Icons like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum are, of course, great to tick off the bucket list, but what I like most about Rome is wandering around trendy districts like Trastevere, Salario, and Trieste, where you’ll find authentic restaurants and shops.
If you want to avoid the worst of the crowds, consider visiting in winter – it’s actually a great time to see it.
4) Hanoi, Vietnam
Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam, which also happens to be one of the world’s cheapest countries to visit right now.
The city was hugely popular in 2023, and that trend looks set to continue well into this year, thanks to Hanoi’s impressive blend of cultural and historical attractions.
Hanoi has a compelling blend of Eastern and Western architecture and is an amazing place to sample the very best of Vietnamese cuisine for a low price – it costs as little as $2-3 for some basic street food.
3) London, United Kingdom
There aren’t too many more things one can say or write about London – it’s one of the world’s most interesting cities, and it’s great for solo travelers.
In 2024, some amazing luxury hotels will be opening, and you’ll also be able to experience a different side of the city in the old Battersea Power Station, which is now a deluxe shopping mall and entertainment area.
As somewhat of a local, my favorite London hangouts include Bermondsey, Shoreditch, and Stratford.
2) Bali, Indonesia
The flagship destination in Indonesia, Bali’s allure seems unbreakable.
This paradise island had a strong year for tourism in 2023 and has set its sights on the same again for 2024.
Lush jungle, exquisite beaches, affordable prices, and a relaxed way of life – it’s no wonder that Bali is the OG when it comes to digital nomad destinations.
1) Dubai, United Arab Emirates
For the third consecutive year, Dubai has been named as Tripadvisor’s top destination in the world, proving just how much travelers love it.
This gem is the perfect adult playground with incredible resorts, luxury shopping, beaches, and pools to die for, and more ways to get there than ever before.
Clean, safe, and beautiful in its own way, Dubai will take some shifting to be dethroned of its spot at the top of the pile.
